Product information "Bearded Axe"
Cutting tools of the Vikings commonly doubled as weapons of war when these famed raiders sailed on pillaging forays. Their axes were certainly top of the list and came to symbolize the terror spread among their foes. Varying greatly in size, from small throwing axes to the mighty Danish Axe, these were the most commonly used weapons of these Nordic warriors. Our Bearded Axe is typical pattern, capable of cleaving helms or armour with impunity.

Out of the box it requires a new handle and a new edge - and I do mean a full regrinding. After That It's great. But it's a lot of work so much I would think the price is just little much.

Ulfberht Sword
An old legend has it that a Nordic smith named Ulfberht developed the first all steel blade. This crucial development achieved near-mythical status among warriors, making this one of the most important swords in the study of medieval weapons. Several of these blades from slightly different time periods exist, some engraved in gratitude and reference with Ulfberht's hallowed name. Prior to the Ulfberht swords, all European swords were of the pattern welded variety. Soft iron bars were welded together with strips of steel, forged into a blade shape, then a steel edge was welded onto the sword. But, the Ulfberht sword was a quantum leap in both technology and design. Not strips, but good carbon steel blades with enough carbon content to produce excellent swords. Not only was the material better, but the design of the sword was a definite improvement. The blade tapered more sharply to the point than did previous blades. This put the balance of the sword closer to the hand, making a sword that was faster on both the stroke and recovery than previous blades. The engravings on both sides of the blade were photocopied exactly. The blade is made of high carbon steel and is beautifully balanced. The grip is wood wrapped with leather. The stout crossguard is steel, and the pommel is of the brazil nut shape that was quite popular at the time, both with Vikings and the rest of Europe. A beautiful and important sword. A scabbard is included. Details Total length 90,81 cm Blade length 76,84 cm Blade width 5,4 cm Weight 1,3 kg

Viking Beard Axe
The axe is one of the first tools to be manufactured by humankind. The simplicity of its construction and its inherent versatility means that axes have been an integral part of every human culture. Axes however are associated to the Vikings more than any other group of warriors. Axes were a vital part of Viking life, as evidenced by archaeological digs at Viking sites. However, it's important to understand that the basis of Viking life was not raping and pillaging, but agriculture. Axes were an essential farming and household tool. As they did with all of their weapons, Vikings usually named their axes, often naming them after she-trolls. However, axes never had the same cultural significance to Viking warriors as swords and spears did. The Viking axe was not a sacred weapon but an immensely practical one; something that could be for combat but was most commonly called on for simple domestic or agricultural duties. In war however, the Viking axe was a devastating weapons in hand-to-hand combat, capable of splitting a man's skull, or thrown against an opponent’s shield. Around the 10th century, the Vikings developed the weapon known as the Dane Axe. This is that huge, terrifying battle axe that we commonly associate with Vikings. Its shaft could be as long as six feet, and the head had a cutting surface of up to twelve inches. The head of the Dane Axe was extremely thin, with thicknesses as narrow as 2mm along the edge of the blade. With a lightweight design, these were easy to swing and provided a wide radius of destruction with little risk to the axe getting stuck, although they were not as useful in hand-to-hand combat as the smaller hand axe. Although associated with Vikings - the Dane Axe still appears on the state coat of arms of Norway - the Dane Axe was actually most popular in England, where it continued to be used into the 16th century, long after the influence of the Vikings had waned. Viking Axe
The Throwing Axe could be used as a weapon in two ways in the days of the Vikings. Our throwing axe has also proved itself in modern throwing competitions as a well balanced piece. Replacement shafts are available.
