Cinquedea

The Cinquedea [Ching-kwi-dey-uh] has held a long fascination for us here at Cold Steel. It gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for noblemen walking through the narrow alleyways and walled cities of Italy. A blade worn exclusively for civilian self-defense, it was essentially the precursor to the civilian side sword and the rapier – and yet, this instrument of personal protection seems to have owed much of its design to fashion as it did to the cut and thrust of mortal combat! Surviving examples of these unusual short handled and steeply tapered blades are often highly embellished and ornate. With etched or gilded blades and deep multiple fullers that border on jewelry rather than weaponry – but beneath the romanticisms of high renaissance fashion lay a tool made with purpose. Roman Gladius Sword

The Roman Gladius is perhaps the most well-known piece of ancient weaponry. It’s simple and long, double edge blade which had a long point, made it ideal when faced against the advancing armour of the time. Cold Steel’s interpretation is not a reproduction of a specific ancient Gladius, but is a collection of this venerable sword’s major features. The blade, for example, has the traditional shape, but, unlike the ancient version, is made from high carbon steel with a spring temper. It is fully sharpened on both edges and has a fine mirror polish. The point is long, but sturdy enough to resist bending or breaking. It also features a Rosewood grip, carved, and decorated in the classical style. The wood scabbard is covered in black leather and accented with a throat, chape, and carrying rings made of solid brass. Wasteland Gladius in the continuation of our A.P.O.C. Series of weapons. Containing all the expected features of the swords in the series, our Wasteland Gladius design arises from the larger gladius designs featuring a pronounced “wasp-waist” or “leaf blade” curvature. Along the 21 3/8” blade edge it gives you different angles for different tasks needed on the desolate wastes. The blade flares out from 1 3/8” to 2” creating a brutal chopping cutter and a powerful piercing point or whichever you need. Gladiator Maximus Sword

The prototype of this breathtaking sword comes from the epic blockbuster, "Gladiator," directed by Ridley Scott and awarded several Oscars. Actor Russel Crow wields this sword in his role as General Maximus Decimus Meridius.At 76 cm long, this sword of tempered carbon steel is very long for a weapon from this era. To this end, Maximus' sword cannot be classed with the gladius style widely in use at the time, but is rather an early version of the longer spatha. Holy Roman Empire 14th Century Longsword, Royal Armouries Collection

If this sword looks familiar, it should. This sword is of the same type as the famous sword that most scholars have agreed belonged to Edward IV, the Black Prince. The original, designated as IX.1106 by the Royal Armouries, is a mid-to-late 14th century knightly longsword, found in Lake Constance, where Austria, Germany and Switzerland meet. This sword features a stiff tapered blade, which is double- edged and straight, with an acute tip. It has a hand-and-a-half hilt, which could be used one or two handed, and an imposingly large wheel pommel. This sword is of notably robust proportions overall and is rather heavy (1775g) compared to most longswords of this size, the blade being very thick in the spine for its whole length, and the large pommel counterbalancing it. The blade is of a simple flatted diamond cross-section, but the pommel has some complex and subtle shaping, with the front and back planes uniquely canted inward at the top. This sword would have been used principally by armored men-at-arms and knights, usually one-handed on horseback or two-handed on foot. Swords like this were being used all over Europe in the second half of the 14th century and would have been familiar to fencing masters like Fiore dei Liberi and used at battles like Sempach in 1386. This sword seems quite specialized to armored combat and halfswording (gripping the blade with one hand), due to the notable stiffness and mass of the blade. The edge geometry is quite obtuse, but the blade has a lot of presence in the strike. Equally, the weighty pommel could be used with good effect to strike in close combat.This replica is crafted with a better blade than the original; the blade is hand forged by a skilled blacksmith exactly in the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and is distally tapered for proper weight distribution.The sheath is made to replicate one of the period, with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features a traditional cut-out. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso.Includes a certificate of authenticity on heavy stock.Windlass Classic Wax and polishing cloth are included.
