English 15th Century Long Sword, Royal Armouries Collection

This is a reproduction of an early 15th century knightly longsword, believed to have been found in the River Thames before finding its way into the Tower of London collection. Dating to around 1400-1430, this is the sort of hand-and-a-half sword that was often carried by knights and men-at-arms, and it features a two-handed hilt with scent-stopper pommel. The stiff and acutely-tapered blade ends in a robust but slender point. This sword was used in one or two hands, depending on circumstance, and in armored combat the blade could also be gripped in halfswording, to better drive the point into the gaps of an armored opponent, and also to use the crossguard and pommel for wrestling and striking. This is exactly the type of sword that many English knights would have carried at the Battle of Agincourt. The blade of this sword has three transitions, from a hollow ground blunt ricasso next to the guard, to a hexagonal cross-section and finally to the flattened diamond section point. This sword strikes with authority, despite the narrow appearance. This is due to the surprisingly thick spine for most of the length of the blade, making it very stiff, and ideally suited to halfswording and thrusting into things like mail voiders at the armpits of an enemy knight’s armor. A relatively nimble sword, but with more blade presence than you might expect.This replica is crafted with a better blade than the original; the blade is hand forged by a skilled blacksmith exactly in the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and is distally tapered for proper weight distribution.The sheath is made to replicate one of the period, with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features a traditional cut-out. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso.Includes a certificate of authenticity on heavy stock. Windlass Classic Wax and polishing cloth are included. French Napoleonic 1801 Cuirassier Sword

Despite the waning effectiveness of plate armor against the increasing proficiency of firearms, the French cavalry in Napoleon’s army still wore cuirasses - Medieval-style breast and back plates - with mixed success. They were mildly useful for deflecting long-range musket and pistol fire (we emphasize “mildly”), but when combined with an ornate, gorgon-headed helmet that featured plumes and horse-tail hair, the Cuirassier’s battle dress created quite an imposing figure as he charged into the fray. Surviving accounts from British opponents attest to the petrifying spectacle of compact groups of Cuirassiers emerging from behind the French front lines. This is his sword; the French Model 1801 Cuirassier’s sword is a heavy cavalry saber with a straight blade, as the French favored the thrust over slashing or cutting. This replica weighs a little over 3 lbs, the substantial mass needed to accomplish a lance-type thrusting attack. The grip features leather that is dimpled using a historically authentic "wet-wrap" process, during which fine cord is tightly wrapped around a wet leather grip. When it's dry, the cord is removed and the leather is left attractively indented and provides improved texture and grip. In Arbedo on June 22, 1422 the famous Milanese cavalry commander Carmagnola, along with Angelo de la Pergola, 6,000 horsemen and 4,000 footmen, attacked an army of 4,000 Swiss pikemen and halberdiers. As the battle raged on, a group of Swiss foragers wandered near the scene. Both Carmagnola and de la Pergola thought the foragers were another army and pulled back, allowing the Swiss to retire in good order. This bloody, rather inconclusive battle left a large percentage of Swiss dead, although Carmagnola's army actually lost more men. We've named this beautiful type XVIIIa war sword after that battle at Arbedo, where either side would have carried it. The effective cutting blade tapers to a sharp, deadly point. Landsknecht Katzbalger Sword

Beginning in the 14th century, Swiss pikemen established themselves as dominant mercenaries. But an equally courageous, stout competitor later appeared from Germany. Landsknecht troops challenged Swiss superiority in a "No Quarter" rivalry that lasted for years. The flamboyantly dressed German Landsknecht mercenary lived a harsh, brutal life and were famous for their giant, two-hand Flamberge sword. After using the Flamberge to break an enemy's row of front-line pikemen, a smaller, one-hand sword was employed for the ensuing close-quarters combat - the Katzbalger. Not as fancy as its slightly frivolous looking (but nonetheless deadly) big brother, the Katzbalger (roughly translates to "cat-gutter") was still highly styled and was designed to be an effective cut and thrust sword. Carried by all Landsknecht troops, including the pikemen and arquebusiers, this sword had an ornate "closed s" shaped guard and an extra long, fluted pommel. The Katzbalger was most assuredly respectful of its Renaissance roots.Our replica is just as battle ready as the originals. The beautifully rendered grip would do any Landskecht proud. The fluting in the pommel extends seamlessly into the wood grip, and the guard is expertly spiral twisted and terminates in half-spheres. The tempered, high carbon steel blade is adorned with a trio of fullers that slightly lighten the blade.The black leather scabbard is mildly decorated with leather bands that criss-cross and are knotted near the throat and has a unique steel tip. Gladiator Maximus Sword

The prototype of this breathtaking sword comes from the epic blockbuster, "Gladiator," directed by Ridley Scott and awarded several Oscars. Actor Russel Crow wields this sword in his role as General Maximus Decimus Meridius.At 76 cm long, this sword of tempered carbon steel is very long for a weapon from this era. To this end, Maximus' sword cannot be classed with the gladius style widely in use at the time, but is rather an early version of the longer spatha. Whereas the grip design does indeed align with the Roman gladius with its lathe-turned imitation ivory and the half spherical cross guard.The latter as well as the pommel are made of beautifully grained wood with a red brown varnish and have typical Roman brass ornaments. While Cinquedea were often carried as civilian sidearms, and some examples were highly decorated, this example is relatively plain and workmanlike, and could have been carried as a military sidearm by someone like an infantryman or gunner. The impressively broad blade of 26 inches has a complex transition from three down to two fullers, with a thin and distally tapered cross-section which make this a very light and fast weapon for the size. Our replica has faithfully copied all aspects of the form and statistics, the most interesting of which is the unique hilt construction. The ingenious and iconic guard design is fabricated of various components welded together, as in the original. The heel of the blade actually extends completely through the guard and is riveted to it (see photos). The blade heel and rivet heads are then ground flush with the guard and the whole assembly is polished. This method provides exceptional strength and durability. The blade also has a full profile tang, with hardwood grip scales and decorative brass filigree inlaid rivets. The sheath is made with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features ornate cut-outs and an acorn tip. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso. 15th Century Longsword

The longsword, often called a hand-and-half, saw a great deal of service as a weapon of war, but was also employed a great deal as a civilian weapon of self- defense. Coupled with a dagger, the longsword was an excellent defense against robbers, thieves, footpads, assassins and even some of the robber bands that might roam the countryside. A good serviceable point allowed it to be used for thrusting, and a medium weight allowed it to be used easily and carried with equal ease. This weight also allowed it to be used with one hand with a dagger in the other. But when needed, it could be gripped with both hands for a very powerful cut. Pommel and guard are steel. English or French 15th Century Two-Handed Sword, Royal Armouries Collection

One of the more graceful big swords in existence. This is a replica of a mid-15th century two-handed sword, or great sword, example IX.1787 in the Royal Armouries flabbergasting collection of edged weapons. This sword is believed to have been excavated in France, near the site of the Battle of Castillon. It was purchased by the Royal Armouries in 1978 and is part of an important archaeological grouping of over eighty Castillon-associated swords discovered in the river nearby. This sword is believed to be part of a distinct English style of two-handed swords, though given its provenance it could also be French. It is proportioned very much like a typical hand-and-a-half sword of the time, but entirely scaled up to an imposing size. Featuring a fish-tail pommel, straight guard with swollen terminals, and double-edged blade having a flattened-diamond cross-section. The blade is a versatile cut and thrust type. Two-handed swords of this type were being used increasingly as specialized weapons in the middle and later 15th century, laying the foundations of the massive, sometimes garish two-handed swords of the next century (such as the Swiss Zweihander and the Landsknecht Flamberge) . This sword would have been in use during the last years of the Hundred Years War and swords like it were carried throughout the Wars of the Roses and into the early Tudor era. This is a huge and imposing, even stately sword, but moves surprisingly quickly, due to the hilt length, mass distribution and distal taper. A sword like this would be less of a sidearm and more of a primary contender against things like pollaxes and bills.This replica is crafted with a better blade than the original; the blade is hand forged by an experienced, skilled blacksmith exactly in the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and is distally tapered for proper weight distribution.The sheath is made to replicate one of the period, with a wood body and covered with leather. 14th Century Hand-and-a-Half Sword - Royal Armouries Collection

An imposingly large hand-and-a-half sword or longsword, probably of the late-14th century. The precise origin of this European sword is unknown, but from the markings it is likely to be German or possibly Italian. It found its way into the Arsenal of Alexandria either as a diplomatic gift, war booty or as a tribute object from the Kingdom of Cyprus to the Sultanate of Egypt, where it was inscribed with Arabic text. From there it made its way into at least one private collection, before subsequently being acquired by the Royal Armouries. This big knightly sword features a broad and powerful Oakeshott Type XVI blade of 38 inches. This is quite a heavy sword by the standards of the day, due to the length and breadth of the blade, but is wonderfully balanced thanks to the distal taper, long grip and large pommel. Similar swords to this can be seen extensively in late-14th and early-15th century art, including manuscripts and also knightly effigies and brasses. Such swords were popular at this time all over Europe, from England to Italy, from Portugal to Poland, and they are featured in a number of contemporary fighting treatises like Fior di Battaglia by Fiore delli Liberi (1410). They were used on foot and mounted, in armour and unarmoured, with one hand or two-handed. This example is an especially powerful cutting weapon and less specialised tothe thrust than some other longswords of the time. Our replica closely matches the original in all aspects of form, measurements and manufacture. The sheath is made with a wood body and covered with leather. Holy Roman Empire 14th Century Longsword, Royal Armouries Collection

If this sword looks familiar, it should. This sword is of the same type as the famous sword that most scholars have agreed belonged to Edward IV, the Black Prince. The original, designated as IX.1106 by the Royal Armouries, is a mid-to-late 14th century knightly longsword, found in Lake Constance, where Austria, Germany and Switzerland meet. This sword features a stiff tapered blade, which is double- edged and straight, with an acute tip. It has a hand-and-a-half hilt, which could be used one or two handed, and an imposingly large wheel pommel. This sword is of notably robust proportions overall and is rather heavy (1775g) compared to most longswords of this size, the blade being very thick in the spine for its whole length, and the large pommel counterbalancing it. The blade is of a simple flatted diamond cross-section, but the pommel has some complex and subtle shaping, with the front and back planes uniquely canted inward at the top. This sword would have been used principally by armored men-at-arms and knights, usually one-handed on horseback or two-handed on foot. Swords like this were being used all over Europe in the second half of the 14th century and would have been familiar to fencing masters like Fiore dei Liberi and used at battles like Sempach in 1386. This sword seems quite specialized to armored combat and halfswording (gripping the blade with one hand), due to the notable stiffness and mass of the blade. The edge geometry is quite obtuse, but the blade has a lot of presence in the strike. Equally, the weighty pommel could be used with good effect to strike in close combat.This replica is crafted with a better blade than the original; the blade is hand forged by a skilled blacksmith exactly in the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and is distally tapered for proper weight distribution.The sheath is made to replicate one of the period, with a wood body and covered with leather. English or French Single-Edged Arming Sword, Royal Armouries Collection

An unusual single-edged arming sword of the mid-15th century, reputedly from the Castillon group of swords found in a nearby river and purchased by the Royal Armouries in 1984. Over 80 swords, as well as other weapons, were reputedly recovered from this one archaeological find, but this sword is without direct comparison in that group, having a distinctive hilt and very unusual single-edged blade. At first sight it looks like a regular double-edged arming sword with a central tip, but on closer inspection it has a single-edged blade, of wedge cross-section, having a false edge on the back of the blade near the tip. The blade is remarkably wide and thin, with a very acute edge geometry leading to a fine edge, sharing some physical similarities with other single-edged swords such as falchions. The crossguard quillons end in curled tips to retain an opponent’s blade, the asymmetrical grip is located towards the back edge, and the squat scent stopper pommel makes the short grip comfortable to hold. This sword could have been carried by any professional soldier of the late Hundred Years War, from a well-equipped archer to a man-at-arms or knight, or indeed as a civilian sidearm, perhaps with a buckler. Swords with comparable hilt forms are shown in art until the end of the 15th century. This sword feels very nimble, and it is deceptively light compared to its width, due to the thinness of the blade and distal taper.While it could thrust effectively against unarmored targets, it seems to be optimized for cutting, the tip being broader and the blade more flexible than a typical arming sword of the time.This replica is crafted with a better blade than the original; the blade is hand forged by an experienced, skilled blacksmith exactly in the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and is distally tapered for proper weight distribution.The sheath is made to replicate one of the period, with a wood body and covered with leather. Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Sharp

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This version features a sharp Marquenched spring steel blade. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. Classified as type XIIIa by Oakeshott, the Two handed Templar stands as one of the most significant swords of the medieval period. Favoured for its reach and devastating cutting abilities, the two handed sword gained ground as the most venerated weapon of the 12th and 13th c. British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Saber

Designed by Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the 1796 pattern light cavalry saber was based on Central and Eastern European hussar swords. As a young captain, he observed the clumsy design of the heavy, overly long 1788 Pattern swords. Le Marchant opined that the "blades of the Turks, Mamelukes, Moors, and Hungarians (were) preferable to any other." He gave the blade of this saber a pronounced curve, which made it more adept at cavalry attack methods, and designed it with a widened tip that affected the balance, but made slashes far more brutal. It was issued primarily to British light dragoons and hussars and was also used by the King's German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade profile became so popular that the Prussians and other German states emulated its design throughout the 19th century.This exact replica of an original antique weighs only 1 lb, 12 oz, and the blade features an extreme distal taper, enabling it to feel exceptionally lively. Ulfberht Sword

An old legend has it that a Nordic smith named Ulfberht developed the first all steel blade. This crucial development achieved near-mythical status among warriors, making this one of the most important swords in the study of medieval weapons. Several of these blades from slightly different time periods exist, some engraved in gratitude and reference with Ulfberht's hallowed name. Prior to the Ulfberht swords, all European swords were of the pattern welded variety. Soft iron bars were welded together with strips of steel, forged into a blade shape, then a steel edge was welded onto the sword. But, the Ulfberht sword was a quantum leap in both technology and design. Not strips, but good carbon steel blades with enough carbon content to produce excellent swords. Not only was the material better, but the design of the sword was a definite improvement. The blade tapered more sharply to the point than did previous blades. This put the balance of the sword closer to the hand, making a sword that was faster on both the stroke and recovery than previous blades. The engravings on both sides of the blade were photocopied exactly. The blade is made of high carbon steel and is beautifully balanced. The grip is wood wrapped with leather. The stout crossguard is steel, and the pommel is of the brazil nut shape that was quite popular at the time, both with Vikings and the rest of Europe. A beautiful and important sword. French Napoleonic Infantry Artillery Short Sword

The French military based this sword on the famous and effective Roman Gladius, the standard short sword of the Roman Legionnaires. Originally issued in 1816, the solid brass hilt had a grip that resembled fish scales. When the sword was updated and reissued as the Model 1831, the grip was redesigned with a ringed pattern. Although it could be used as a combat weapon in a pinch, it was primarily used as a machete to clear fields for guns. Because of its usefulness as an all-around tool, it gained a nick-name, “coupe-chou” (roughly translating to “cabbage cutter”). The Model 1831 remained in service until about 1870, and its design was adapted by the United States to create the Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword. This faithful replica is just like the originals, with a solid brass hilt and a scabbard with a brass tip and throat. Also includes belt frog. Late 15th Century Arming Sword - Royal Armouries Collection

This arming sword in the Royal Armouries Collection dates to the late-15th century and is likely to be of English provenance. This type of sword is a medium-to-high status sidearm of the late-15th century and into the early 16th century, and would have been worn both with and without armour. It would have been a knightly backup weapon, used in combat both on foot and mounted. This sword shares some obvious similarities with the Westminster Abbey sword, which has been long associated with Henry V (but now believed to be from Henry VII's funeral achievements). It also shares a number of close similarities with other swords from English churches, and from representations of swords on English funeral effigies and brasses. Due to the state of preservation, it has been suggested that this sword may indeed have been taken from an English church monument in past centuries, where it was likely originally deposited in the late-15th century. Our replica is a precise, faithful replica, manufactured traditionally in very similar ways to the original. It features a robust cut and thrust Oakeshott Type XVIII blade of just over 30 inches, long curved quillons with characteristic terminals, short grip and prominent solid wheel pommel. The original has some unusual floral engraving at the base of the blade, which we have not replicated, because unfortunately on the original it is too damaged to reproduce with any certainty. The sheath is made with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape that features ornate cut-outs and an acorn tip. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard at the ricasso. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts, the original can be seen in the Royal Armouries Collection, Object Number IX.1426. Based on Oakeshott's Type XIIIa specification these swords were used in the 12th to early 13th Century in that transitional period from hardened leather to mail with some plate armor protecting vital areas of the body.We spent a lot of time discussing with Gus his methodology for developing what he would call a "performance-oriented" sword. Without getting too deep into it Gus, along with Tinker Pearce, was one of the pioneering sword makers to incorporate the notion of harmonic balance into his sword designs. Informed by historical examples and his own experimentation Gus has been making swords for decades now that seem to float in your hand. For this sword Gus left the aesthetics and materials up to us, it was the design (weight, balance, taper, harmonics) we had to get right. It took several rounds of samples (not to mention a botched first run) but we finally nailed it.Not satisfied with just getting the design right we wanted to push it farther. We had the fundamentals down but chose to take the materials and fit and finish a step ahead. The blade is hand forged mono-tempered 9260 spring steel, flat ground with a handsome satin finish. The fittings are high quality stainless steel exactly matching Gus's design. The grip is a solid wood core, cord-wrapped for strength with a textured leather over-wrap. A late 15th century English infantry hanger, or falchion. The original has resided in the Royal Armouries Collection since before 1916 and its exact origin before that is unknown, but it is part of an English group of similar swords. This family of swords, sometimes known as ‘Wakefield’ hangers, often feature beaked pommels and S-shaped hand guards. Some have an additional side bar or lug on the guard, as seen in this example. (Note: the lug on the original had been damaged and is bent upward, meaning it actually pokes into the hand. The lug is properly curved downward on our reproduction.) These short swords were popular sidearms for billmen and archers during the Wars of the Roses and into the early Tudor period. Thousands of swords like this would have seen action in battles like Towton, Barnet, Tewkesbury and Bosworth. This example features a deceptively complex and challenging single edge blade, with subtle transitions of cross-section and clever hollow grinding and a fuller to make it lighter. It has a graceful hollow ground front edge and a slender but strong point, with a thick spine able to deal with the rigors of fighting armoured opponents in jacks, mail and plate. The hilt provides a good level of hand protection for the time, for soldiers who were not generally wearing gauntlets. A quick and easily maneuverable sword, designed to be efficient at cutting and slashing.This replica is crafted with a better blade than the original; the blade is hand forged by a skilled blacksmith exactly in the same manner as the original, but with superior modern 1080 high carbon steel that is fully tempered and is distally tapered for proper weight distribution.The sheath is made to replicate one of the period, with a wood body and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape. British 1796 Heavy Cavalry Saber

Used by British Lifeguards, Royal Horse Guards, Dragoon Guards and Dragoons through the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It was directly copied from the Austrian Pallasch 1769 heavy cavalry sword. British cavalry officer John Le Marchant attentively made drawings of the weapons carried by the Austrian cavalry during the Low Countries Campaign in 1793-95, and likely was involved in the recommendation of this pattern to his superiors. Notable for its use at Salamanca and Waterloo. Technically the 1796 heavy cavalry sword is a backsword, defined as a sword with a straight blade with one cutting edge and a spine (the "back") thickened for most of its length to give added strength. In fact, this is not a delicately maneuverable sword by any stretch of the imagination, and gained favor as a bludgeoning weapon. Troops also used the guard as a knuckle duster. The blade is forged with a single broad fuller on each side. The grip is of ribbed leather. The basket guard has ears which are riveted through the tang of the blade to give the hilt and blade a very secure connection. The hilt combines a disc guard pierced with 2 semicircular and 6 oval holes, with a single knucklebow and two slim 2-inch-long (51 mm) langets (projections from the guard, which grip the throat of the scabbard) extending from the front of the guard. Two handed Danish Sword

Danish Two Handed Sword, Type XVIIIe, Medieval Sword 15th Century (1410-1500) The history of Denmark is filled with tumultuous periods of war and strife, conflicts driven by the same political and religious factors that were widespread throughout Medieval and Post-Medieval Europe. Smaller kingdoms were swallowed up by larger, and larger kingdoms splintered apart. Due to this fairly colorful history, the Danes became known for some distinctive weaponry, of which this Danish Two-Handed battle ready Sword is an example. This medieval sword is classified as an Oakeshott Type XVIIIe, a very unusual member of the Type XVIII group. These two handed danish sword are some of the few that can be safely tied to a specific region. Type XVIIIe medieval swords have been found almost exclusively in Denmark. It is believed however that some examples may actually be German or Italian in origin. The unique and defining characteristic of this type of sword is its unusual narrowed ricasso.It features a long, stiff diamond shaped blade with an extremely long handle, making it suitable for cut and thrust swordplay as many other swords were in the later 15th Century. The original scimitar was called a shamshir, (which meant "lion's tail") and had a deeply curved blade that was almost a half circle. Developed in Persia, this type of blade was effective for drawcuts, but other than that, of limited utility. This caused the blade to shift its shape into a more useful version, which we have chosen to copy. The blade is quite effective, being able to drawcut as well as slash, and the point is quite useful in the often used "hooking" thrust. Colada is one of the two best-known swords, along with Tizona, of El Cid Campeador. Won in combat from the Count of Barcelona, the sword was presented (along with Tizona) to his sons in law. According to the heroic verses of the Cantar de Mío Cid, after his sons-in-law beat his daughters and then abandoned them on the side of the road, El Cid asked for his gifts to be returned. Afterward, he bestowed the sword upon one of his knights, Martín Antolínez.Though its authenticity is doubted, a blade named Colada and traditionally identified with that of El Cid, with the addition of a 16th-century hilt, is preserved in the Royal Palace of Madrid.According to Sebastián de Covarrubias, Colada clearly means a sword made from "acero colado", a process of alloyed steel without impurities.As with Tizona, Colada appears in the epic poem Cantar de mio Cid as a sword that frightens unworthy opponents if wielded by a brave warrior. El Cid gives the sword to Martín Antolínez as a present, and he uses it in the duel against the infante Diego González.“Tizona” and “Colada” both swords belonged to the Castilian knight Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as “EL CID CAMPEADOR” in the XI century.Noble and soldier Castilian, which at the head of his own army managed to dominate practically all the East of the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 11th century. Tinker 9th Century Viking sharp

While not a direct copy of any particular sword, the Viking sword design was inspired by historical examples from the early 9th Century, most notably finds from the area around Trondheim, Norway, where the circular indentation hilt decoration was popular. The scabbards are provided with suspension points and a period chape, giving the sheathed sword a very attractive appearance. The construction of the Viking "pair" differs from other swords in the Tinker series in as much as they are tang-riveted (peened) in period fashion at the pommel, primarily to satisfy Viking re-enactment requirements. As with the other swords in the series, replacement blades are available. Again, the handling characteristics of the two swords are virtually identical. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. US 1860 Heavy Cavalry Saber

At the outbreak of the American Civil War, there were two types of sabers issued to the Federal Cavalry: "light" and "heavy". The light version was popular, but the heavy model, dubbed the "Old Wrist Breaker" was the one worth owning, as it was a superior weapon. Its 36" blade offered big reach advantages over most sabers, and its substantial weight gave it the leverage to easily crush bones and sever limbs or even a head with a single blow. The brass guard had three bars to protect the hand and the grip was wire bound leather and capped with a sturdy pommel. In its double ringed, steel scabbard, it could be easily attached to a saddle or to a belt. After examining and handling a number of original 1860 Heavy Cavalry Sabers, we decided to make our own reproduction with a few improvements. Our blade is made from 1050 high carbon steel with a hard spring temper and will pass the British Proof Test. Game of Thrones - The High King Sword

The History Ireland has a rich history of tradition and mythology. From antiquity and medieval sources we hear tales of heroes and faeries, gods and monsters, that have passed from legend into scholarship and popular culture. One of the most prominent figures in Irish lore, however, was not an individual but an office – the Ard-Rí, High King over all Ireland, who brought together the smaller warring kingdoms under one rule. Inspiration and Development The High Kings of Ireland purportedly ruled over Ireland from 1500 BC until the Norman invasion in the late 12th century AD, though scholars are quick to point out that much of that early history is considered to be mythological. According to tradition, the list of High Kings includes many heroes of Irish lore including Lugh of the Long Arm. Lugh is a famous heroic figure in Irish mythology, having ruled as High King for two decades as well as being a member of the Tuath Dé Danann, the pantheon of the ancient Irish people. As High King, Lugh was granted Fragarach, the sword of the sea god Manannán mac Lir. The magic blade Fragarach (Gaelic for “The Answerer”) was a powerful sword forged by the gods and capable of cutting down the walls of a city. The legends also stated no one could lie when The Answerer was held to their throat as it magically compelled people to speak the truth. Fragarach passed through the hands of several of Ireland’s High Kings, and is one of several mythic weapons associated with the seat of power that ruled over Ireland for over 2000 years. The Darksword Armory High King Sword is inspired by those legends. Distinctive Features One of the most distinctive features of this particular sword is the pommel, which has an open ring shape. This style is typically called an “Irish Ring Hilt,” and has been seen on historical Irish swords as well as examples in Celtic artwork. It has also made its appearance in modern fantasy, most recently on the sword belonging to the warrior known as “The Mountain” in HBO’s Game of Thrones. The High King takes some of its inspiration from all of those sources, and is our take on a mythological Irish weapon once wielded by those ancient rulers. Darksword’s Take This is one of Darksword Armory’s largest swords to date. The massive (X) inch broad blade is designed with the claymore in mind, able to be an effective weapon for single combat or in large battles. A foot soldier with this in hand would be able to sweep a knight in armor off of their heavy horse and finish them off on the ground. The (Y) inch handle allows for a wide, two-handed grip, maximizing the torque that can be applied in each swing. The tang on this sword is wide and thick, and becomes visible when it passes through the open pommel. The guard is a slightly curved modern design, which is our way of adding a personal touch on this piece that is inspired from history, mythology, and fantasy. The Black Death Gothic Sword

Despite innovations both technological and cultural, the human race in Europe was very nearly wiped out during the 14th century by a disease we now call the bubonic plague. Beginning in the 1340’s were decades of death by one of the most virulent diseases in history – one that would kill between 75 and 200 million people before it had run its course in the early 15th century. The death rate in Europe was recently estimated at nearly 45-50%. Carried by diseased rats and spread to humans via fleas, it was a remarkably infectious and deadly disease, killing most victims within a week of infection. It was also an almost unimaginably painful way to die, as victims suffered with agonizing black boils and enormous tumors for days before drowning in infected lungs. These black boils may have led to the plague’s most common nomenclature – The Black Death. To Europe’s inhabitants, it seemed like the end of days – and it almost was. It was also a crisis of faith on an unbelievable scale that changed the course of Europe’s culture forever. For centuries afterward The Black Death had a lasting impact on culture, drawing out morbidity and mortality as primary themes in art and architecture. Stark lines, images of deep sorrow, even specters of death grew to prominence during this period as Europe struggled to cope with a tragedy on such an epic scale. These themes spread across the continent and established themselves as primary features in many cities. Paris was one such city, embracing gothic architecture and letting the suffering of the Black Death seep into its marrow in a way that never quite left. Indeed, one of the first examples of the Danse Macabre (a classical image of Gothic morbidity) appeared in Paris at the Church of the Holy Innocents less than twenty years after the last resurgence of the plague in Europe. It should be no surprise, then, that when faced with a public health crisis even centuries after the plague itself that they allowed a solution to blossom that was gothic on a truly inspired level. During the 18th century Paris was running out of room for graveyards, and the health issues caused by so many burials within their walls – especially the smell – that a solution had to be found. City officials decreed that graveyards would be emptied, and the remains were sent to a network of caves, quarries, and tunnels twisting and turning for hundreds of miles beneath the city. From this decision was born the Paris Catacombs. Within the Catacombs lie the remains of an estimated 6 million people, most of them skeletal. Unlike traditional burial grounds, though, the bones removed to the Paris Catacombs Catacombs_of_Paris,inspiration for black death medieval swordwere arranged with an eye towards Gothic sensibilities – as macabre a scene as you could ever find in all of Europe. Miles of tunnels are lines with artistically arranged skulls and bones combines with crosses and other religious iconography, creating a grim yet beautiful reminder of mortality. Currently the Paris Catacombs are a tourist attraction, though not one without risks – there are long portions that are off-limits and unmapped, and modern Parisians have gotten lost while exploring, and died alone in the darkness. The Black Death Gothic Sword was inspired by a journey through the Paris catacombs by Darksword Armory founder Eyal Azerad in April 2013. Replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, our Mortuary Hilt Sword is a classic example of a cavalry or dragoon officer´s sword of the 17th century English Civil War period. Deriving its name from the style of sword which memorialized King Charles I, who was executed in 1649, The Mortuary Hilt Sword´s steel basket is decorated with scrolled foliage while an engraved head of Charles I appears on the pommel. The lozenge-section double-edged blade is partially fullered and bears the swordmaker´s mark "1414", the derivation of which has been lost in time. The leather handle wrap terminates in silver wire "Turks Head" knots. The sword, like the original, is beautifully balanced. The sword is available in both polished and antiqued finishes. Both hilts are crafted from stainless steel, to minimize maintenance, that of the normal version is being polished while the "antiqued" version has a museum-quality patina. The high-carbon blade of the normale one is also lightly "antiqued" to promote authenticity. The grips of the mortuary-hilt are covered with leather. Ertzaintza is the autonomous police of the Basque Country, created in 1982 by Lendakari Carlos Garaikoetxea in development of the Statute of Guernica. Its origin as a police officer of the Basque Country is located in the old municipal militias to stop a banditry favored by social and political convulsions. It is one of the four Spanish forces and security forces of an autonomous nature, together with the Catalan Mozos de Escuadra, the Foral Police of Navarra and the Canary Police. In 1982, a prototype of a Grand Gala uniform, post-Napoleonic, was made, inspired by those uniforms used by the "Chasseurs D’Orleans" of the 1840s by French troops. Subsequently it is modified by giving a line similar to General Zumalakarregi's coat, but playing in its composition of colors, green, red and silver. The image of this garment, is of great presidency and solemnity, singled out in the bodies of Great Honors, for its colorfulness, distinction and packaging. The accessories of the uniform are: Txapela, gloves, shoulder strap, saber and neck. It is a slightly curved blade saber with inscriptions on the blade: on the one hand, ERTZAINA 1982 and on the other, ARABA, BIZKAIA, GIPUZKOA, LAPURDI, NAFARROA, ZUBEROA. Henry V Sword

The Henry V’s sword is an iconic weapon that changed the political structure of medieval Europe during the 100 year war. Henry V’s sword is not only remembered for being a sword of kings, but also remembered as the iconic weapon in William Shakespeare’s play of the same name, which immortalised the St Crispin’s day speech, invoking the memory of “we few, we happy few, we band of brothers” which has resonated down the centuries. Being an historical piece, we carefully examined the sword in April of 2016. The sword, shield and helmet is displayed in the dimly lit basement of the Westminster Abbey in London, England. While striving to respect the historical proportions of the sword, we also recognize the importance of making it a functional piece for modern demands of students of the sword. We proceeded to create a beautifully practical, yet sophisticated sword with an equally beautiful guard and pommel and peen-block. Our vision for the Henry V sword, was to create a medieval weapon worthy of the aristocracy, by way of balance and performance, while keeping the decorative elements, as the original, to bare minimum. The perfect balance and swift response and agility of the sword would have to make this a royal medieval weapon of choice . Indeed Ewart Oakeshott described the sword as “one of the most beautiful medieval swords to handle I have ever known.” While creativity was kept to a minimum, given the historical character, we nonetheless decided to elaborate on the guard by broadening the tear drop with center curved arches and hollow ground diamond blade. Like many arming swords during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453), Henry V’s sword was forged with clean minimalist lines repeated on the pommel, guard and blade, forming an artistic flow of coherent lines and symmetry. While not overly decorated, Henry V’s sword was nonetheless one of the most beautiful examples of a clean arming sword which spoke volumes about its creator and wielder. As such, considerable attention was paid to the crisp deep diamond shape geometry of the blade as well as its’ performance and balance. While not entirely a flat diamond blade, Henry V’s sword at the Westminster Abbey, is by no means hollow ground. We therefore felt that a simple diamond blade would not do justice to the sword and proceeded in making a low hollow ground diamond blade, making the center defined and crisp, but not overly con caved. Henry V (1386-1422) waged war during a period of transition, witnessing an increase in heavy armor. During the 15th century, as heavy armor became increasingly common, the arming sword became the medieval weapon of choice for both the mounted knight and foot soldier of considerable status. Shorter and stiff, the arming sword, classified as a type XVIII sword, was perfect for close quarter combat. It was light, well balanced and had a sharp tapper and stiff tip, specifically designed to puncture the newly advent of heavy armor. The diamond cross sectional blade gave the sword devastating stabbing force against plated armor and brigandines (leather vest lined with iron plates), while retaining its destructive cutting edge. The type XVIII sword was composed of a straight-tapering blade, with an acutely-pointed profile and stiff diamond cross section capable of both thrust and cut. A remarkable example is held at the Wallace collection. Henry V’s sword, as with all type XVIII arming swords, is a one handed sword. While mainly popular during the 14th and 15th C, arming swords such as the type XV, with a more flattened type diamond shape blade came into use during the later part of the 13th century. The hollow ground diamond shape counterpart (Type XVIII) According to Ewart Oakeshott, began during the second quarter of the 15th century. “the four faces of the blade, instead of being flat or very gently hollowed, are so strongly hollowed out that a nearly flat blade with a powerful upstanding mid-rib results….surviving examples seem not to date earlier than 1425” (Ewart Oakeshott, “The Sword in the Age of Chivalry” p, 59). During this period, sword geometry evolved to balance thrusting with the cutting geometry of previous periods. It was during this period that blade geometry began morphing more quickly as a thumbnail_Arming-sword-wallace-collectionresponse to the technological advances of the full plate armor of the medieval knights. As such, we designed the sword with a deep hollow ground blade rather than a flat diamond cross sectional one. The blade is stiff and has a four-sided triangle-shape profile, with a diamond cross section, acute point and no fuller. Such blades were popular from the 15th century among the nobility for their resilience, light weight, dexterity and devastating thrusting capabilities. Due to these advantages, the type XVIII arming swords became the prevailing weapon of the 15th C. Arming swords were exclusively owned by the elite aristocracy of the time. That said however, arming sword with flattened diamond blades were also used by the foot soldiers. Their use was so common among the knights of the German, French and English forces that it came to be known as the quintessential sword of the medieval knight of the 14th and 15th century. Being specifically designed for close quarter combat, we wanted the Henry V Sword to have superb handling capabilities, an exceptional response and a very good PoB (point of balance). Paying considerable attention to the PoB, the Henry V sword is an exceptionally easy one handed medieval weapon to handle for both experienced and amateur sword enthusiasts. Henry V was King of England from 1413 until his death in 1422, at the age of 35. During his reign, Henry V became one of England’s most important monarchs for several reasons. among them, are his victories in the Hundred Years War. Until his untimely death from dysentery, he was recognized as a powerful warrior and brilliant military tactician – who fought as young as 14 and lead an army at 16. Despite the long list of achievements, Henry V is most remembered for his unparalleled military techniques displayed at the battle of Agincourt. Greatly outnumbered and starved, the English forced defeated the French almost entirely due to the young King’s military strategy. The Henry V battle ready sword, labelled as a type XVIII.1 by Ewart Oakeshott, was apparently ” hung above the chantry of Henry V until it either fell, or was taken down and stawed away in an old chest”. When studying the Henry V medieval sword, Oakeshott described it as “the very epitome of a fighting weapons” and “one of the most beautiful medieval swords to handle I have ever known.” Okeshott described the sword as being graceful, with an acute tip. “the 2” wide blade dawns a four-sided flattened diamond cross section, typically associated with type XVIII Medieval Swords. The extremely tapered blade points to its transitional role from a purely hacking and slashing weapon to one that had both cutting and thrusting capabilities. In the late 14th C., improvements in plate armor began to appear and a new type of sword was required to successfully counter these improvements. As a whole, the design of Henry V’s sword, mostly due to its blade geometry, makes it as one of the most interesting swords to handle. Perfectly balanced, responsive, powerful yet light, the Henry V sword is considered as one of the best conceived swords of the late medieval period. In later writings, Oakeshott described it as “..no mere funerary object, but as a magnificent fighting sword which comes to life in one’s hand.” Details: Blade: 5160 High Carbon Steel. “The Hastings” is an elegant design fostered by the classic hand-and-a-half sword of the Noman knights. Inspired by an Oakeshott Sub-Type XIIIa, this version has a double fuller which extends to ¾ the length of the blade. This Model 1844 Mounting sword is included within the Spanish Weapons group where the Shield flanked by the initials G.C. reproduces the emblem of a Corps, with a garnish of three hawks made specifically for Civil Guard Officers. The "1844 model riding sword for Civil Guard Officer" was one of the first white weapons of the Civil Guard Corps manufactured in the prestigious White Weapons Factory of Toledo. Our Basket-Hilt Broadsword carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-eighteenth century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. Although the blade of the original bears the "Andrea Ferara" name, it is unlikely that it was made by this renowned Spanish swordsmith, as many good quality blades of the period were so marked (in various spellings!), irrespective of the actual maker. The Doge Sword

The Republic of Venice was distinct from many other European states for several reasons. For one, it had an almost unheard-of longevity – the Republic existed as a political and for over a thousand years, from the 7th to the 18th centuries, when many other nations rose, fell, and faded to obscurity. For another, it had a unique governing structure; whereas many nations during its thousand-year existence were ruled by monarchies of varying levels of control and influence, the Republic was overseen by the Great Council of Venice. This parliament was composed of a hereditary ruling class of powerful merchants and aristocrats who together created laws, elected the Council of Ten (the leaders of the city-state), and the elected the head of state – the individual known as the Doge of Venice.The Doge (generally translated as “Duke”) was not, unlike most positions of power in Europe at the time, a hereditary office. The Doge was elected for life, it was true, but was forbidden from choosing a successor – this eliminated the possibility of the office becoming a monarchy. The position was not one that provided great wealth or influence; in fact, the Doge was prevented from owning any foreign land, and after the Doge’s death his family was liable for any crimes he had committed in office (presumably as a method of inspiring honesty and integrity). In later years the power of the Doge declined, and though it became a largely symbolic office there were still benefits to ruling Venice – one of which was the ability to live in the Doge’s Palace.The Doge’s Palace (Pałaso Dogal in Venetian) is an excellent example of Venice’s take on Gothic architecture. 14th Century Two Handed Sword

For nearly two centuries, the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon – known as the Knights Templar – were a political, military, and religious force in Europe and the Middle East. Formed at the end of the First Crusade as a group of knights – originally French – who took monastic vows, they swore to protect pilgrims travelling from Europe to the Holy Land. Their headquarters was in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount, which led to their name (which references the Temple of Solomon). While the Order began without wealth, living off donations from villagers, the Templar Knights emerged as an extremely wealthy and politically powerful organisation. One of the reasons for this was Pope Innocent II’s 1139 proclamation that exempted the Order from local laws, which left them answerable to no government except the Pope himself. This catapulted them from an order of militaristic monks into a political force to be reckoned with. Initially, the Knights Templar were a military order – and a wildly successful one, with stores of their mounted knights breaking much superior forces. However, as the Order expanded, they began branching out in new and innovative directions. The Order became an early form of bank, able to receive deposits, hold valuables and funds, and provide loans – with interest, previously forbidden to church organisations. This newfound ability became the Order’s primary focus, and their activities changed to match. Many wealthy and powerful people found themselves in debt to a military order that was above the law in every sense of the word. One such individual was King Phillip IV of France, who was deeply indebted to the Order. King Phillip initiated the fall of the Order in 1307, arresting many Knights Templar and torturing them into admitted to heresy. Facing political pressure as a result of the scandal, Pope Clement ordered the Order dissolved in 1312. Many of their members were executed, their assets were seized and distributed to other orders of the Church, and the last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake in 1314. The greatest military force of the Crusader era was gone. Despite this fall from grace, the Knights Templar have captured the imagination of modern sword collectors and history enthusiasts. Their weapons have been the subject of much interest, and while many of the original weapons were destroyed and or thrown into rivers following the dissolution of the Order, a handful of good examples survived. Numerous photographs of the original Two Handed Templar sword are published in “The Journal of Arms and Armour Society”, (Oakeshott, E. “A war sword of the XIVth Century in the Guildhall Museum”). The sword of the crusaders and the Templar Knights, in their crucifix form, exemplifies the archetypical Sword of the middle ages. There are, however, a series of books by D.A. Kinsley that cast a sceptical light on this running debate. Kinsley recounts numerous incidents (collected form battlefields throughout the British Empire) where cutting swords proved equal, if not superior, to thrusting swords in deciding the outcome of a skirmish. The Sword of Bannockburn

Most North Americans were introduced to the character of Robert the Bruce, King Scotland (1306-1329), to the 20th century film Braveheart, a film which remains controversial in Scotland due to its historical “liberties”. The aspect of the film most reviled by Scottish citizens is its portrayal of Robert the Bruce as coward, as someone who betrayed William Wallace, and as a Scottish traitor. In the film, only Wallace convinces Robert the Bruce to finally turn his strength against King Edward II. In reality, Robert the Bruce fought the English independently of Wallace for many years. However, the film ending on the decisive Battle of Bannockburn is at least appropriate, as Bannockburn was the location of one of Robert the Bruce’s greatest victories in the Wars for Scottish Independence. Robert the Bruce, born Robert the first in 1274 CE, was one of many claimants for the Scottish throne in the late 13th century. He and his family participated in campaigns against the English, including some alongside William Wallace. Prior to Wallace’s death in 1305, Robert the Bruce and many other Scottish nobles vied for their place in line for the throne. In 1306, Robert killed his rival John Comyn, swiftly seized the crown, and began a cut-and-thrust guerilla campaign against the English throughout Scottish territories. In 1310 Robert began a very successful campaign involving several major battles against the English. Edward II of England refuse to back down, though, and in 1314 sent an army of devastating size against Robert the Bruce’s much smaller force. The two armies would meet south of the city of Stirling close to the Bannockburn Stream, for a battle that would last two days – almost unheard of in medieval warfare. England sent over 20,000 men including knights and heavy infantry, which would make it the largest army to ever invaded Scotland. The Scottish forces were outnumbered three to one. On the first day of the battle, the English Advanced in order to retake the city of Stirling. The Scottish troops pushed the English across the river. Elsewhere, the heavily armed English – bogged down by their gear in the swampy marshland – suffered greatly and turned back to their camp in discouragement. In the early hours of the following morning, Robert the Bruce led his army in an assault against the English position. The English were in complete disarray, with smaller English parties being quickly surrounded and killed and numerous commanders being slain. The English cavalry being pinned against the banks of the river, and English archers inflicting casualties on friendly forces, thousands of English knights and soldiers were killed or captured, and Edward II barely escaped with his life. The Battle of Bannockburn was more than a single skirmish – it was a culmination of Robert the Bruce’s path to becoming king of an independent Scotland.
