English War Hammer

Circa 1530 With the increasing sturdiness of plate armour, the sword became less and less effective against a fully armoured knight. Hammers, axes and maces soon became the weapon of choice for hand-to-hand combat of the mounted knight. The war hammer quickly evolved and became one of the premier weapons. Generally it was lighter and faster than the mace. Often it was made somewhat longer, so that the reach could be extended, but it could be shortened as well if need be. Light, fast and deadly. Horseman's Pick

At first glance, a horseman's pick doesn't seem especially threatening. But take another look – because almost the whole mass of this weapon is concentrated in the head of the hammer, the cut of a relatively light hammer has a force that can dent plate armor and break bones. Combine the head with a curved steel spike that comes to a brutal point and the result is a horseman's pick that can pierce armor. The handle of our horseman's pick has a square profile and is made of solid wood. Chinese Mace

Early Chinese archers dispensed with their swords as back-up weapons and used a mace instead. Armor had become sophisticated enough to stop a sword blow, but a heavy mace could crush helmets and armor by concussive force alone. The Cold Steel® Chinese Mace is a highly versatile design we believe any Chinese soldier or archer would be proud to own. The classic head is reminiscent of a pumpkin in shape and is approximately 3 inches in diameter. It is welded to a steel shaft handle that is wrapped with leather for a firm grip. Chinese Flange Mace 15cm

Maces of this type were in use for hundreds of years as they were simple to make, relatively inexpensive and highly effective especially against enemies in plate armor. The whole point of the flanges was to concentrate the weight and power of a blow with the mace in one or two narrow ridges so they would better transmit force and crush flesh, bone and armor. A hard blow from a mace could stop the heart of an armored opponent or crush his arm so he was incapacitated and move his arm or leg, knee, elbow. The mace was carried by the watch (police of the day), archers, foot soldiers, men at arms and knights. We are proud to add this eye catching Germanic-style Mace to our line-up of historically inspired Man at Arms weapons. This modern interpretation of a classical Gothic mace is hand made from 1055 carbon steel. It features a thick walled hollow steel handle, and a weighty pommel to counter-balance the Mace’s heavy helmet crushing head. Designed to oppose armored foes, the MAA Gothic Mace features six steel flanges. Each one is profiled and tapered to reduce weight but also add “bite” upon impact, denting and crushing even the strongest plate armor, while the spiked finial at the crown allows the Mace to be used as a thrusting tool. War Hammer

A fully armed 13th Century Knight was a true power, capable of plowing through a multitude of opponents while encased in his state of the art plate armor that could shed, deflect or absorb the blows of many of his foes. Enter the War Hammer- an ideal weapon for use against an opponent who is encased in plate steel. The heavy hammer head could crush the strongest helmet or suit of plate armor with just a few blows and the back spike could rip through helm and plate like a modern can opener! In battle, the hammer side was usually employed first to knock down and stun an enemy. Once he was on the ground, helpless, the hammer was reversed and the back spike was used to punch a hole through the helmet and deliver the coup de grace. Now Cold Steel brings you an inexpensive, yet highly effective, recreation of this awesome weapon. Weighing a little over 1120 g, the War Hammer is highly maneuverable and can be easily wielded with one or both hands. The head is drop forged out of 1055 steel and differentially heat treated. This means the point of the spike and enormous hammer face (approx. 3.8 cm x 3.8 cm) are fully hardened so they can pierce and crush tough materials without failing while the rest of the hammer is left soft to absorb the shock of heavy blows. The handle of this War Hammer has been designed to be equally tough. Made of straight grain American Hickory and measuring approx. 76 cm long it provides tremendous leverage so enormously powerful blows may be struck. To protect the handle from assault by an opponent armed with an edged weapon we have included a pair of sturdy steel langets which can be attached below the head with the screws provided.
