Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Sharp

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This version features a sharp Marquenched spring steel blade. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. For the Medieval models the very end of the tang is threaded to fit an allen nut recessed into the pommel which allows for dismantling of the hilt assembly for inspection, to exchange blades if needed, and for anyone wanting to easily customize their grip. Also the sharp and blunt blades are interchangeable on all Medieval models. The grips are cord wrapped and leather covered wood and tapered for a comfortable grip. The original scimitar was called a shamshir, (which meant "lion's tail") and had a deeply curved blade that was almost a half circle. Developed in Persia, this type of blade was effective for drawcuts, but other than that, of limited utility. This caused the blade to shift its shape into a more useful version, which we have chosen to copy. The blade is quite effective, being able to drawcut as well as slash, and the point is quite useful in the often used "hooking" thrust. 12th Century Sword

A well known leading expert on medieval swords comments that the original could be from as early as 1100 to as late as 1250. And we trust that he should know. The pommel, a faceted wheel, is a shape encountered in the Leppaho Viking swords, a group of swords excavated from Viking graves dating from 980-1000. The crossguard is of an early form, which the Vikings referred to as Gaddhjalt [spike hilt].
