Practical Katana Plus

Raptor Wakizashi

Bamboo Katana

In 1876, the Samurai were banned from carrying their swords. This attempt to end a thousand year tradition was not received well by the proud warrior class and the "stick katana" was born. Innocuous walking canes now concealed the revered blades, but the katana lived on. Practical Shinobi Ninjato

The Practical Shinobi Ninja-to, whose construction patterns closely that of the Practical Katana, is a wonderful addition for those studying the Way of the Ninja. The blade is made of hand-forged high-carbon steel and is differentially tempered using a traditional claying method. All the fittings (koshirae) are done in antiqued black iron. The ornate tsuba displays the kuji-kiri (energy-channeling hand positions) employed by the mystical ninja. Bushido Katana

Each piece in the Bushido group has a hand-forged and folded ASSAB-K120C powder steel blade, differentially tempered to produce an HRC60 edge, HRC40 back and a distinctive hamon. Saya are deeply lacquered in old gold with inlaid brass sakura flowers. Quality ray skin is used on the tsuka of the Katana and Wakizashi, while the tsuka of the Tanto is of gold-plated brass with a battle-scene decoration in relief. The tsuba of the Katana and Wakizashi is of blackened and bronzed iron, with detailing in gold and silver and a battle scene decoration. The tsuka-ito on the Katana and Wakizashi and the sageo on all three pieces are woven from Japanese cotton. The fuchi and kashira are of blackened bronze with brass detailing, and the kojira, koiguchi and kurigata are of polished horn. The habaki is brass. Tsunami Tanto

Each piece in the Tsunami Series has a hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel blade (nagasa) and is differentially tempered using a traditional claying method. The tsuba, fuchi, & kashira are made of black iron and marked with the Tomoe crest (mon). The temper lines (hamon) are evident and prominent. Each piece has a deeply lacquered black saya with a one-piece brass habaki construction. Practical Bastard Sword

By customer request CAS` have produced a re-enactment version of our the Original Bastard sword. The blade is forged in 5160 high-carbon steel, to minimize burring, and the transverse thickness of the guard has been increased, both to provide adequate strength for re-enactment use and to present a safer profile at the ends of the guard. Another innovation is the provision of an all-leather scabbard, in contrast with the rigid scabbards normally provided with the Practical swords - this is designed both to provide an extra margin of safety when combatants fall on the scabbard in battle and also to minimize the need for replacement scabbards. Tinker Early Medieval sword Replacement Blade sharp

Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Sharp

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This version features a sharp Marquenched spring steel blade. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Solingen Main Gauche antiqued

Based on models of 17th century swept-hilt rapiers of Germanic ancestry, our Solingen Rapier with matching main gauche is an excellent rendition of the timely originals. The blades are constructed of forged high-carbon steel and are equipped with leather scabbards. The guard has a beautiful design with S-curved quillons to protect the hand and for wrapping the fingers around to increase one´s grip strength. Low Lander Two Handed Great Sword antiqued

Wielded with untamed ferocity on many a Gaelic battlefield, the massive Lowlander sword vividly illustrates the might of the Scots of old. Known as "Slaughter-Swords" in the 16th century, these were the swords of choice for Scottish mercenaries of the period, and at close to six feet long the Lowlander faithfully replicates a surviving museum piece. Though by far the largest sword ever offered by CAS/Hanwei, the Lowlander is beautifully proportioned and balanced. Saxon

CAS Hanwei’s smiths have outdone themselves with their recreation of a 9th Century Saxon sword by replicating a technique used by the Saxons and Vikings and producing a stunning blade that features a pattern-welded core with high-carbon edge sections. This technique was used by the old-time smiths as a means of producing blades (just for the rich folks) that were sharp, resilient and decorative and eleven hundred years on, CAS Hanwei has made them affordable. The sword’s design is based on a 9th Century piece found in the bank of a stream in England in 1976 and now on display in the Yorkshire Museum. Sparring Jian Sword

Traditionally Chinese Martial Artists have used wooden "wasters" during sparring practice to inform their training and perfect their technique. While these wasters are generally safe, they have serious limitations for learning how swords actually behave during sparring. Date Masamune Katana

Continuing in the new Generals Series, the artisans at Hanwei pay homage to the One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu, Date Masamune. Known for his signature audacious Crescent Moon kabuto and black and gold armor, his legacy is one of conquest by blood and steel which was contrasted by a reputation of being forward thinking, cultured, diplomatic and sympathetic to foreign causes and Christianity. Basket Hilt Broadsword

Although Basket-Hilt swords appeared throughout Britain from the mid-sixteenth century on, their association with the the seventeenth and eighteenth century highlander has become legendary. Our Basket-Hilt Broadsword carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-eighteenth century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. Although the blade of the original bears the "Andrea Ferara" name, it is unlikely that it was made by this renowned Spanish swordsmith, as many good quality blades of the period were so marked (in various spellings!), irrespective of the actual maker. Uesugi Katana

Uesugi Kenshin was one of feudal Japans most unique and honorable daimyo of Senkugo period. Being born Nageo Kagetora, a third or fourth son, his early years were those of quiet and study until his sickly older brother’s incompetence to rule caused family friends to encourage him to challenge his sibling’s station. After wrestling control from his brother and several well-planned alliances, adoption as heir of the Uesugi klan, some changes in titles in land and several military victories, he rose in power and became known by many names, but specifically the “Dragon of Echigo.” He became renowned for reforms in commerce and agriculture in securing his lands and raising the standard of life for his people.As the legendary Takeda Shingen expanded his territory and power, he soon found his borders under siege and thus began their great rivalry. Mostly just indecisive skirmishes in the beginning, their fourth encounter which would be their largest, the Battle of Kawanakajima, Kenshin employed a new strategy of rotating soldiers on the front line with fresh troops nearly winning the battle. So pitched was this battle Kenshin rode up to Shingen and slashed at him by which Takeda deflected with his famed war fan. Yet depending on whose statistics you believe; many scholars consider this encounter a draw.Such respect Uesugi had for Shingen, when Takeda broke with the Hojo clan who soon after boycotted the Kai Province of salt, Kenshin sent his rival salt from his own province with the message, “I do not fight with salt, but with the sword.” Even at Takeda Shingen’s death, Kenshin said “I have lost my good rival. We won't have a hero like that again!” But even after his rival’s death, Kenshin found a new one in the rising power of Oda Nobunaga. Golden Oriole Wakizashi

During the Muromachi period (1568-1603), the introduction of the pairing of the Katana (the curved sword) and Wakizashi was introduced. The Wakizashi, or the shorter companion blade to the Katana, was about 18 inches long. Only the warrior class - the Samurai - was allowed to wear the two swords, which remained a custom for the next several hundred years until abolished in the 19th century. Our Practical Katanas have always been at the forefront of providing economical yet functional swords to the martial arts cutting community. Designed for multiple cuts in normal targets, these Practical Elites combine the blade geometries and profiles of the Performance Series with the affordability of our Practical fittings. The blades are forged in 1566 steel and differentially hardened in the traditional manner, producing an edge hardness of HRC60 and spine hardness of HRC40. The removeable handle is tightly wrapped in the tradtional style with imitation leather to provide a positive grip that will withstand years of kata or tameshigiri practice. Tonbo Wakizashi

The blade of the Tonbo wakizashi is hand-forged and folded from powder steel, with a medium-length (chu) kissaki. The saya is a deep black lacquer featuring gold dragonflies. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka. The tsuka-ito is made of premium purple Japanese cotton. The tsuba is crafted in black iron, with detailing in gold and bronze and an exquisite dragonfly scene decoration. The silk sageo compliments this piece and is elegently woven in dark blue and black. The fuchi and kashira are black with bronze and brass detailing, and the kojiri, koiguchi and kurikata are of polished buffalo horn. The habaki is a one-piece brass construction. Takeda Shingen Katana

A legend of many names, the Tiger of Kai, Shinano no Kami, and competitor for power to Tokugawa Ieysau , Oda Nobunaga and Uesugi Kenshin, Takeda Shingen commanded respect on the battlefield as well as the political arena. Representing the best and worst of the romantic perception of the feudal lords of the time, Takeda had some of the most forward thinking political ideals as a ruler over his people. Hanwei memorializes Takeda Shingen in steel with this new katana. This classic tsuba depicts Takeda wielding his favorite weapon, the war fan. The blade side of the tsuba features the “ wind, forest, fire & mountain” moto of the Takeda clan taken from Sun Tzu which is carried over to the fuchi in gold. Solingen Rapier

Based on models of 17th century swept-hilt rapiers of Germanic ancestry, our Solingen Rapier with matching main gauche is an excellent rendition of the timely originals. The blades are constructed of forged high-carbon steel and are equipped with leather scabbards. The guard has a beautiful design with S-curved quillons to protect the hand and for wrapping the fingers around to increase one´s grip strength. Dadao

Shamshir

The shamshir came to notoriety in the Persian empire around the 12th century, and more notably in the 13th century with the Mongol invasion. A versatile weapon on foot or in the mount, the long, deeply curved blade was capable of devasting deep cuts and some thrusts which makes for an excellent calvary sword. Its five-century evolution came to a pinnacle during the Ottoman Empire to what we perceive as a shamshir today.Hanwei’s Shamshir pays tribute to the craftsmanship and excellence of the blades of the past with keeping true to form on the classic stylings. Qi Jian

From the master swordsmiths of the Hanwei forge comes the Qi Jian, a re-creation of an ancient design that utilized one-piece forging. The entire sword, from pommel to tip, has been forged from a single billet of steel. This forging technique provides unparalleled strength and balance while exhibiting a clear, bell-like tone when lightly struck. The sword´s name originates with the Qi nation, one of the many warring states that eventually formed modern China. Radaelli Sabre

One of the rapidly growing arts within historical fencing societies is that of sabre fencing in the late 19th century Italian style, originating with fencing masters who were employed to train mounted troops in the effective use of the military sabre. The Milanese fencing master Guiseppe Radaelli, is credited with starting the development of this style, while Salvatore Pecoraro introduced changes and refinements which resulted in the technique finally adopted for sabre at the Military Masters School in Rome. The hilt designs developed by Radaelli and Pecoraro have been reproduced in our fencing sabers, with stainless steel guards and wire-wrapped sharkskin-pattern grips. The high-carbon flex-tempered steel blades closely follow the proportions of the period and are button-tipped for safety. The blade and hilt of the "Hutton" sabre are closer to the style of the true military sabre. The blade is somewhat shortened and lightened, with a rounded tip for effective training. Dragon Armor - Full Suit

Hanwei's Dragon Armour, named for the helmet crest (mon), is made for the connoisseur of Japanese armours. It faithfully replicates a Byotoji Do Gusoku from the Edo period which, like many fine armours, incorporates an earlier helmet bowl from the Momoyama period. European influence on Samurai armour is discernible in the slight median ridge to the front section of the byotoji okegawa do (breastplate) which, by this period, was designed to deflect musket balls. The plates of the do, with waved edges, are fastened with elaborate shakudo rivets in the form of flowers with gilt centers. This feature illustrates the Japanese preference for a more flexible style of armour than the typical European one-piece breastplate construction. The carrying chest/display seat (hitsu) is black lacquered with the Dragon mon emblazoned in silver on the front panel. Overall, the antiqued patina of the gusoku gives a period appearance and provides a rich addition to any Japanese décor.Our full-sized suits of Samurai armour provide displays of outstanding quality for the den or the dojo. Caper with a Drop Point Style Blade from Rock Creek Knife Line made by CAS Hanwei. Forged from a high-alloy steel (HWS-1) proprietary to Hanwei, with an edge hardness of 58-60HRc and excellent corrosion resistance, edge-holding and ease of sharpening. Handforged Naginata

The Naginata, famed weapon of the Sohei, or warrior monks, of medieval Japan was fearsome in the hands of a skilled combatant and is today of great importance in the martial arts field. Our naginata , while retaining its traditional qualities, has been revised to better meet the needs of the martial arts practitioner. Hand forged 1065 high-carbon steel and edge tempered, using a traditional claying method, the naginata blade is at least the equal of the originals. Mounted on a long tang to better absorb the shock of a blow, the blade has a strong distal taper for balance and quickness. The delicately engraved tsuba features a silver butterfly motif. The one-piece staff (ebu) is very strong, featuring a traditional tear-drop cross-section for easy recognition of blade orientation and a black non-slip finish for better control of the weapon. Tinker Bastard Sword Sharp with fuller

Like the longswords, these Bastard swords are based on the Oakeshott Type XVIIIA and are designed so that both the sharp and blunt versions will perform identically in the hand, offering the possiblity of sparring and cutting with swords that feel and respond in exactly the same way. The sharp blade is produced in two slightly different versions, one diamond-sectioned throughout its length and the other almost identical but fullered for about one third of its length. The blunt has a longer, broader fuller to compensate for the added edge thickness. The tip of the blunt is sufficiently flexible to provide an adequate level of safety. Wheel-type pommels are sized to provide a grip for the second hand when required. Designed by noted sword smith Michael "Tinker" Pearce and manufacutered by Hanwei, these bastard swords have been are made to satisfy the need of every sword enthusiast, to have a matching set of sharp and blunt swords for cutting and safe training practice. Raptor Unokubi Zukuri

The Raptor series, our new line of cutting katanas, has been designed for the cutting practitioner who does not necessarily have access to mats but who wishes to practice and perfect his cutting technique. The blades are forged in 5160 high-carbon steel and specially heat treated to produce very high resilience and greater tolerance of misdirected cuts than a conventional differentially tempered blade. Handforged Yari

The Yari was an essential battlefield weapon of the Samurai and took great skill to use and maneuver due to its length and size. The yari by CAS/Hanwei is reminiscent of the ones of feudal Japan. The blade is a straight triangulated double-edged forged high-carbon steel with a deep fuller on the flat side of the blade. The tang of the yari is long to absorb the shock of a blow and the one-piece staff construction reinforces the durability of the spear. Our yari is modeled after the su-yari or "straight-spear" design. The shaft (ebu) of the yari is done in a deep black lacquer and has a flattened side at the bottom section for blade orientation. 1881 Shaska Sabre

Toyotomi Hideyoshi Katana

Toyotomi Hideyoshi, born Hiyoshimaru in 1536, rose from peasant status to chief minister of the emperor in 1585 in attempt to complete the goal of unification of Japan by his fallen leader Oda Nobunaga. In 1568 when Nobunaga began his siege of central Japan Hideyoshi fought in many of those important battles. His judicious behavior, positive countenance and intelligence helped him rise through the ranks. Though his lowly origins bely the latter of those traits, Hideyoshi was the architect of many reforms of feudalism in Japan as well as becoming a master of the tea ceremony and educated himself in secret. In 1577 Nobunaga charged Hideyoshi with the subjugation of western Japan. After the betrayal of Nobunaga's retainer, Akechi Mitsuhide, and Nobunaga's suicide, Hideyoshi sought immediate revenge on his leader’s traitor and defeated him at the Battle of Yamazaki.Hideyoshi followed by securing the line of succession by Nobunaga's grandson. After subduing one the powerful vassals supporting Nobunaga's third son, Hideyoshi began fortifying the country by securing all the strongholds and building Osaka castle. Soon after he started the unification process of Japan to complete his mentor's work. After battling Tokugawa Ieyasu which led to a draw, they ended their conflict with an alliance. In 1585 Hideyoshi was appointed kampuku (chancellor to the emperor) and was given the family name of Toyotomi. After subduing the last of the resistance with his new ally, Ieyasu, they went about securing power and stability for Japan by disarming the population, reducing the number of castles and strongholds within the country and freezing the social classes. Hideyoshi abolished road checkpoints to encourage travel and trade. He also conducted large land surveys to develop mineral resources for the formation of coinage to also assist with economic growth.In 1590, Hideyoshi was the head of daimyo alliance the formed the government of national unification. Soon after Hideyoshi passed on his position of kampuku to his nephew, Toyotomi Hidetsugu. In 1592 Hideyoshi began an invasion of Korea which ended in failure but tried again in 1597 and failed. Hideyoshi died in 1601 at the age of 62 where he spent his latter years burdened by his defeat in Korea. Two years after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's death, Ieyasu took control of the government and founded the Tokugawa shogunate. Ieyasu continued Hideyoshi's policies of unification which led into a time of peace in the Tokugawa era.Hanwei has created a genuine piece of sword art with the Toyotomi Hideyoshi Katana. The tsuba depicts the image of Hideyoshi embossed with gold detailing and an etching of Osaka castle on the opposite side. Viking Throwing Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. The Nordic warrior frequently carried several light Throwing Spears into combat. This style displays the narrow, sharply pointed head designed to pierce mail. Several spears might be carried in the shield hand in a charge. These were thrown as the distance closed, leaving the warrior free to use his sword or axe in hand-to-hand fighting. The Sword of Saint Maurice

The Sword of St. Maurice - Oakeshott XI.4 This long and slender single handed sword is a reproduction of the one housed in Vienna that dates from the late 11th to early 12th Centuries. This version of the sword leaves behind the likely later additions to the grip and envisions what an earlier version of the sword may have looked like. Certainly a coronation sword of the Holy Roman Empire the hilt is adorned with the Arms of the Empire eagle crest on one side of the pommel and the personal arms of Otto IV (1198-1218) on the other. The guard is engraved with 'CHRISTUS VINCIT, CHRISTUS REGNAT, CHRISTUS IMPERAT.' (Christ Conquers, Christ Reigns, Christ Rules) used in an antiphon of the coronation anthem as well as a war cry used in the Third Crusade. Scottish Mortuary Hilt Sword antiqued

Replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, our Mortuary Hilt Sword is a classic example of a cavalry or dragoon officer´s sword of the 17th century English Civil War period. Deriving its name from the style of sword which memorialized King Charles I, who was executed in 1649, The Mortuary Hilt Sword´s steel basket is decorated with scrolled foliage while an engraved head of Charles I appears on the pommel. The lozenge-section double-edged blade is partially fullered and bears the swordmaker´s mark "1414", the derivation of which has been lost in time. The leather handle wrap terminates in silver wire "Turks Head" knots. The sword, like the original, is beautifully balanced. The sword is available in both polished and antiqued finishes. Both hilts are crafted from stainless steel, to minimize maintenance, that of the normal version is being polished while the "antiqued" version has a museum-quality patina. The high-carbon blade of the normale one is also lightly "antiqued" to promote authenticity. The grips of the mortuary-hilt are covered with leather. Survival Kukri

For over 20 years Hanwei has been known as the leader in producing high quality, traditionally crafted and functional swords and related weaponry. During this time we have often wondered, what would a high-performance Kukri designed by Hanwei be like? The wait is over. And the answer is exceptional. The Kukri (or khukuri, khukri, etc.) and it's use as both a weapon of war and survival tool is legendary. Typically forged of high carbon steel and heat treated with the simplest of methods (literally poured water over a hot blade) the basic design and construction of the Nepalese Khukuri has been unchanged for centuries. Freed from strict tradition Hanwei has tasked themselves with designing a new modern classic Kukri. They've kept the shape, the balance and the high carbon steel but the rest is substantially upgraded. The heat-treat is now precisely controlled pulling every ounce of performance out of the forged 5160 spring steel, a steel so well regarded in the knife community it is often used for ABS performance test knives. The result holds an edge exceptionally well with a spine soft enough to absorb the stress of repeated impacts. The grip is the biggest change from tradition, and the most welcome. The pommel and guard are stainless steel while the grip is injection molded into a grippy but comfortable pattern. After precise fitting of the guard, grip and pommel the substantial thru-tang is peened and welded in place, resulting in a knife that feels as if it was formed of a solid piece of steel. The sheath is a multi-layer design, with an ABS insert and sturdy nylon shell. Multiple attachment points and carry positions are possible. Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Mounted in black, the Musashi Katana is faithful to the original down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray skin. The blade is hand-forged in high-carbon steel, with new geometry to enhance cutting ability. The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Thrusting Spear was more commonly used than swords, being much less expensive to produce. The wings or lugs, of Frankish origin, both limited the penetration of the weapon and provided an effective parrying guard. Total head length is 41 cm. Another new addition to our line of un-edged "practical" European weapons for use in re-enactment and stage combat. The Practical 11th Century Sword features a "tea-cosy" pommel and a sculptured cross that curves gently towards the blade. The broad blade has full-length fullers and is very lively for an un-edged blade. It weighs around 950 grams. Our Practical broadswords are all based on authentically styled swords in our collection but they are tailored to meet the needs of re-enactment and stage combat. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. They are designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required by many of today´s re-enactment societies. Ching sword

The traditional perception of the form of the T'ai Chi sword becomes very apparent in the Ch'ing Sword. The last of the Chinese Dynasties, the Ch'ing (or Quing) Dynasty was overthrown by rebellion as late as 1911, by which time the T'ai Chi sword had completed its evolution in to the "modern" form. Oni Katana

The Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore similar to western demons or trolls. In modern culture they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation into the role of guardian or protector, similar in character to gargoyles. Their power and ferocity, however, have not diminished. There is a Japanese saying which translates to "Oni with an iron club", or to be of an invincible nature, a fitting association with the 29" L6/Bainite blade on which our Oni Katana is built. The blade features the geometry of our Performance Series for outstanding cutting ability. The 14" tsuka is wrapped in black ray skin and silk ito while the Koshirae feature Oni in various classical styles. A unique combination of folklore and functionality. Bainite is a structure of high-carbon steel that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. Bastard Sword antiqued

The strong and fearless Swiss and Germans originally carried these early weapons, although bastard swords soon became popular in other regions such as the British Isles and Europe. The term bastard undoubtedly comes from the fact that the sword, because of its design, has no legitimate claim to being classified as either a single-handed or two-handed weapon. The two-handed sword was a weapon developed for the use of the foot soldier and had became quite common by the early 1500´s. The combat styles developed for the two-handed sword were the particular specialty of the Northern European Cultures, with the Germanic nations being quite active in its development and use. Raptor Shobu Zukuri

The Raptor series, our new line of cutting katanas, has been designed for the cutting practitioner who does not necessarily have access to mats but who wishes to practice and perfect his cutting technique. The blades are forged in 5160 high-carbon steel and specially heat treated to produce very high resilience and greater tolerance of misdirected cuts than a conventional differentially tempered blade. The edge geometry is configured to facilitate the cutting of both soft and semi-hard materials without chipping, allowing the cutter a wide choice of targets. The Raptor Shobu-Zukuri(Iris Leaf) blade has an elegant shape and powerful cutting ability. Notable for the absence of a Yokote transition, this blade design became popular during the Nanbokucho era (1336 ~1392 AD) and its popularity continued into the Muromachi period. Tinker Norman Sword sharp

New to the Tinker Pearce series of Medieval swords are the Norman swords in both sharp and re-enactment blunt versions. The Norman swords, with their distinctive cruciform guards and brazil-nut pommels, are similar in weight and static balance and offer virtually identical handling characteristics. Both are harmonically balanced – to optimize cutting ability in the case of the sharp version and to provide authentic handling characteristics for the re-enactor. The blades are forged in 5160 high carbon steel and hardened to HRC 50-52 allowing superior edge retention on the sharp and anti-burr safety on the blunt. Cawood

The celebrated Cawood Sword, named after its discovery location near Cawood Castle in England, is regarded as one of the finest and best-preserved examples of an 11th century Viking sword in existence. Preserved in the mud of the bed of the River Ouse for almost a millennium, the sword has now found a permanent home in the Yorkshire Museum, where it is a leading attraction. What is almost certainly a “sister” sword was unearthed in Norway in 1888, giving a valuable clue to the Cawood Sword’s origin. Hanwei’s version of the sword replicates the lobated pommel and steeply down curved quillons of the hilt perfectly, while the wide-fullered blade is reproduced in 5160 high-carbon steel. The weight and balance provide for a very usable sword. No details of the original scabbard are known, but the styling of Hanwei’s leather-covered version is typical of the period. Made by Hanwei. Miao Dao - L6

The Miao Dao, the "grain leaf" sabre, receives its name from the early 20th century despite its ancient origin. Its history is a subject of debate among some scholars and sword enthusiasts but all agree about its reemergence in the mid-16th century by General Qi Jiguang who resurrected the sword to combat pirates raiding coastal cities. After the victory over the pirates the Miao Dao remained useful battling enemies of the Ming Empire which led to this famous general's men to be known as the "invincible Qi army". Highly coveted by the soldiers the swords didn't pass along this weapon easily.This beautiful Hanwei Maio Dao is the pinnacle of Chinese sword craftsmanship. This verion features a 31 1/2" L6 steel blade with a groove on on both sides of the blade to lighten the balance. The ribbed handle is a beautilful black which is echoed by the deep black lacquered scabbard. The gorgiously ornate guard and pommel are stainless steel as well as all the other accutrements.
