CAS Hanwei’s smiths have outdone themselves with their recreation of a 9th Century Saxon sword by replicating a technique used by the Saxons and Vikings and producing a stunning blade that features a pattern-welded core with high-carbon edge sections. Renaissance Wax 200ml

Renaissance wax polish was originally formulated in the British Museum research laboratories in the early 1950's, in response to a discussion amongst museum technicians at an international conference on fine-art conservation. In accelerated ageing tests, the British Museum scientist found that all current commercial waxes based on the usual natural waxes (beeswax and carnauba wax) contained acids which, in time, could spoil original finishes on national historic collections of furniture. Bushido Katana

Each piece in the Bushido group has a hand-forged and folded ASSAB-K120C powder steel blade, differentially tempered to produce an HRC60 edge, HRC40 back and a distinctive hamon. Saya are deeply lacquered in old gold with inlaid brass sakura flowers. Quality ray skin is used on the tsuka of the Katana and Wakizashi, while the tsuka of the Tanto is of gold-plated brass with a battle-scene decoration in relief. The tsuba of the Katana and Wakizashi is of blackened and bronzed iron, with detailing in gold and silver and a battle scene decoration. The tsuka-ito on the Katana and Wakizashi and the sageo on all three pieces are woven from Japanese cotton. Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Sharp

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This version features a sharp Marquenched spring steel blade. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. Sparring Jian Sword

Traditionally Chinese Martial Artists have used wooden "wasters" during sparring practice to inform their training and perfect their technique. While these wasters are generally safe, they have serious limitations for learning how swords actually behave during sparring. Tinker 9th Century Viking sharp

While not a direct copy of any particular sword, the Viking sword design was inspired by historical examples from the early 9th Century, most notably finds from the area around Trondheim, Norway, where the circular indentation hilt decoration was popular. The scabbards are provided with suspension points and a period chape, giving the sheathed sword a very attractive appearance. The construction of the Viking "pair" differs from other swords in the Tinker series in as much as they are tang-riveted (peened) in period fashion at the pommel, primarily to satisfy Viking re-enactment requirements. As with the other swords in the series, replacement blades are available. Again, the handling characteristics of the two swords are virtually identical. Scottish Mortuary Hilt Sword antiqued

Replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, our Mortuary Hilt Sword is a classic example of a cavalry or dragoon officer´s sword of the 17th century English Civil War period. Deriving its name from the style of sword which memorialized King Charles I, who was executed in 1649, The Mortuary Hilt Sword´s steel basket is decorated with scrolled foliage while an engraved head of Charles I appears on the pommel. The lozenge-section double-edged blade is partially fullered and bears the swordmaker´s mark "1414", the derivation of which has been lost in time. The leather handle wrap terminates in silver wire "Turks Head" knots. The sword, like the original, is beautifully balanced. The sword is available in both polished and antiqued finishes. Both hilts are crafted from stainless steel, to minimize maintenance, that of the normal version is being polished while the "antiqued" version has a museum-quality patina. The high-carbon blade of the normale one is also lightly "antiqued" to promote authenticity. The grips of the mortuary-hilt are covered with leather. The scabbards are leather-covered, black in the case of the normal sword and brown for the antiqued one. Basket Hilt Broadsword

Although Basket-Hilt swords appeared throughout Britain from the mid-sixteenth century on, their association with the the seventeenth and eighteenth century highlander has become legendary. Our Basket-Hilt Broadsword carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-eighteenth century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. Although the blade of the original bears the "Andrea Ferara" name, it is unlikely that it was made by this renowned Spanish swordsmith, as many good quality blades of the period were so marked (in various spellings!), irrespective of the actual maker. The forged double-edged blade of our sword is in fully tempered high-carbon steel with a solid steel basket. The grip is wire-wrapped rayskin and the basket liner is of felt-covered leather. Oda Nobunaga

Of the legends of feudal Japan, the name Oda Nobunaga needs little introduction. Newly designed by Hanwei we commemorate this powerful 16th century daimyo in steel instead of words. The 27" forged steel blade features a prominent hamon as well as hi to make the sword quick and light at 2 lbs 6 oz. A beautiful curved symmetry flows from the 1" kissaki to the kashira. The tsuba is a classic Hanwei design of Oda Nobunaga which is often imitated but never truly replicated. The front of the tsuba bears his likeness and mon whereas the blade side depicts two soldiers with yari subduing an enemy. The fuchi is embossed with a gold flintlock and powder bag which pays homage to Oda’s fondness of tanegashima firearms. Embossed in silver and gold is a finely detailed rendering of Oda’s kabuto (helmet). The 11 1/2" tsuka is wrapped in green Japanese cotton over black dyed same (ray skin) which is contrasted by the Nobunaga mon in silver and gold as well. Toyotomi Hideyoshi Katana

Toyotomi Hideyoshi, born Hiyoshimaru in 1536, rose from peasant status to chief minister of the emperor in 1585 in attempt to complete the goal of unification of Japan by his fallen leader Oda Nobunaga. In 1568 when Nobunaga began his siege of central Japan Hideyoshi fought in many of those important battles. His judicious behavior, positive countenance and intelligence helped him rise through the ranks. Though his lowly origins bely the latter of those traits, Hideyoshi was the architect of many reforms of feudalism in Japan as well as becoming a master of the tea ceremony and educated himself in secret. In 1577 Nobunaga charged Hideyoshi with the subjugation of western Japan. After the betrayal of Nobunaga's retainer, Akechi Mitsuhide, and Nobunaga's suicide, Hideyoshi sought immediate revenge on his leader’s traitor and defeated him at the Battle of Yamazaki.Hideyoshi followed by securing the line of succession by Nobunaga's grandson. After subduing one the powerful vassals supporting Nobunaga's third son, Hideyoshi began fortifying the country by securing all the strongholds and building Osaka castle. Soon after he started the unification process of Japan to complete his mentor's work. After battling Tokugawa Ieyasu which led to a draw, they ended their conflict with an alliance. In 1585 Hideyoshi was appointed kampuku (chancellor to the emperor) and was given the family name of Toyotomi. After subduing the last of the resistance with his new ally, Ieyasu, they went about securing power and stability for Japan by disarming the population, reducing the number of castles and strongholds within the country and freezing the social classes. Hideyoshi abolished road checkpoints to encourage travel and trade. He also conducted large land surveys to develop mineral resources for the formation of coinage to also assist with economic growth.In 1590, Hideyoshi was the head of daimyo alliance the formed the government of national unification. Soon after Hideyoshi passed on his position of kampuku to his nephew, Toyotomi Hidetsugu. In 1592 Hideyoshi began an invasion of Korea which ended in failure but tried again in 1597 and failed. Hideyoshi died in 1601 at the age of 62 where he spent his latter years burdened by his defeat in Korea. Two years after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's death, Ieyasu took control of the government and founded the Tokugawa shogunate. Ieyasu continued Hideyoshi's policies of unification which led into a time of peace in the Tokugawa era.Hanwei has created a genuine piece of sword art with the Toyotomi Hideyoshi Katana. The tsuba depicts the image of Hideyoshi embossed with gold detailing and an etching of Osaka castle on the opposite side. The fuchi illustrates the tea ceremony with gold detailing and as well as kashira with its depiction of Osaka castle. The handle is wrapped in black cotton over white same. Shamshir

The shamshir came to notoriety in the Persian empire around the 12th century, and more notably in the 13th century with the Mongol invasion. A versatile weapon on foot or in the mount, the long, deeply curved blade was capable of devasting deep cuts and some thrusts which makes for an excellent calvary sword. Ronin Katana

The Story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated and influential tales of the Samurai from the Edo period. Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo ordered by the Shogun to entertain guests of the Imperial Family. The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was given the task of teaching Asano, among others, proper matters of etiquette in this task. Lord Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other and the teacher insulted his student at every opportunity. No longer able to contain himself, Asano drew his sword upon Kira, wounding him in the attack. This act led to Asano´s ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. On December 14, 1702, nearly one year after Asano´s death, 47 of Asano´s men (now Ronin), descended upon the mansion of Kira to exact their revenge. After a fierce battle, the Ronin demanded that Kira commit seppuku for his transgressions against their former master. When he refused he was beheaded. For their actions the Ronin were themselves sentenced to death by seppuku. They are buried together at the Sengakuji, offering a true testament to the loyalty inherent in the Samurai. Viking Thrusting Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Thrusting Spear was more commonly used than swords, being much less expensive to produce. The wings or lugs, of Frankish origin, both limited the penetration of the weapon and provided an effective parrying guard. Total head length is 41 cm. Each piece in the Tsunami Series is stylized with the renowned Tomoe motif. The tsuba, fuchi, & kashira are made of black iron and marked with the Tomoe crest (mon). Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Blunt Trainer

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This blunt trainer features a Marquenched spring steel blade and is an exceptional match for the I.33 sword and buckler study. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. For the Medieval models the very end of the tang is threaded to fit an allen nut recessed into the pommel which allows for dismantling of the hilt assembly for inspection, to exchange blades if needed, and for anyone wanting to easily customize their grip. Also the sharp and blunt blades are interchangeable on all Medieval models. The grips are cord wrapped and leather covered wood and tapered for a comfortable grip. From the master swordsmiths of the Hanwei forge comes the Qi Jian, a re-creation of an ancient design that utilized one-piece forging. Date Masamune Katana

Continuing in the new Generals Series, the artisans at Hanwei pay homage to the One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu, Date Masamune. Known for his signature audacious Crescent Moon kabuto and black and gold armor, his legacy is one of conquest by blood and steel which was contrasted by a reputation of being forward thinking, cultured, diplomatic and sympathetic to foreign causes and Christianity. Our Date Masamune Katana features the classic Hanwei tsuba of him holding a war fan while the blade side features soldiers with firearms. The kashira is embossed with a blackened one-eyed dragon which is contrasted by the kashira with a gold embossed falcon. The tsuka is wrapped in brown suede around a white same (ray skin) which feels incredibly great in the hands. Tinker Bastard Sword Sharp with fuller

Like the longswords, these Bastard swords are based on the Oakeshott Type XVIIIA and are designed so that both the sharp and blunt versions will perform identically in the hand, offering the possiblity of sparring and cutting with swords that feel and respond in exactly the same way. The sharp blade is produced in two slightly different versions, one diamond-sectioned throughout its length and the other almost identical but fullered for about one third of its length. The blunt has a longer, broader fuller to compensate for the added edge thickness. The tip of the blunt is sufficiently flexible to provide an adequate level of safety. Wheel-type pommels are sized to provide a grip for the second hand when required. Designed by noted sword smith Michael "Tinker" Pearce and manufacutered by Hanwei, these bastard swords have been are made to satisfy the need of every sword enthusiast, to have a matching set of sharp and blunt swords for cutting and safe training practice. Orchid Katana

Each piece in the Orchid group has a hand-forged and folded ASSAB-K120C powder steel blade, differentially tempered to produce an HRC60 edge, HRC40 back and a distinctive hamon. Saya are deeply lacquered in blue. High quality ray skin is used on the tsuka, and the tsuka-ito and sageo on all three pieces are woven from Japanese cotton. The tsuba of the Katana & Wakizashi is of blackened iron, with an Orchid and Butterfly decoration inlaid in silver, brass and copper. The koiguchi and kurigata are of buffalo horn, and the fuchi, kashira and kojiri are of bronzed iron with silver and gold detailing. The habaki is of one-piece brass construction. Practical 11th Century Sword

Another new addition to our line of un-edged "practical" European weapons for use in re-enactment and stage combat. The Practical 11th Century Sword features a "tea-cosy" pommel and a sculptured cross that curves gently towards the blade. The broad blade has full-length fullers and is very lively for an un-edged blade. It weighs around 950 grams. Our Practical broadswords are all based on authentically styled swords in our collection but they are tailored to meet the needs of re-enactment and stage combat. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. They are designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required by many of today´s re-enactment societies. The blades are crafted from 1065 high-carbon steel, hardened to 50HRC, which restricts edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness. While the blades are substantial, they are fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics. They feature 2 mm wide edges and rounded tips for safety. The tangs are also substantial, with radiused corners at the blade shoulders and no welds. The end of the tang is riveted over the pommel, which both eliminates any possibility of inadvertent disassembly and provides a traditional means of tightening a loose hilt. The hardwood grips are leather-covered. The scabbards are fabricated in glass-filled resin, to provide great impact resistance, to eliminate swelling and to minimize blade corrosion problems. The scabbards now feature belt rings that adjust to allow vertical or horizontal carry. The wood-grain finish is attractive, but most re-enactors will decorate the scabbard to match their persona. The Sword of Saint Maurice

The Sword of St. Maurice - Oakeshott XI.4 This long and slender single handed sword is a reproduction of the one housed in Vienna that dates from the late 11th to early 12th Centuries. This version of the sword leaves behind the likely later additions to the grip and envisions what an earlier version of the sword may have looked like. Certainly a coronation sword of the Holy Roman Empire the hilt is adorned with the Arms of the Empire eagle crest on one side of the pommel and the personal arms of Otto IV (1198-1218) on the other. The guard is engraved with 'CHRISTUS VINCIT, CHRISTUS REGNAT, CHRISTUS IMPERAT.' (Christ Conquers, Christ Reigns, Christ Rules) used in an antiphon of the coronation anthem as well as a war cry used in the Third Crusade. Oakeshott's Type XI swords are slender, mostly parallel blades with a long and thin fuller. This sword is on the longer side of the type with exceptional proportions. Cawood

The celebrated Cawood Sword, named after its discovery location near Cawood Castle in England, is regarded as one of the finest and best-preserved examples of an 11th century Viking sword in existence. Preserved in the mud of the bed of the River Ouse for almost a millennium, the sword has now found a permanent home in the Yorkshire Museum, where it is a leading attraction. What is almost certainly a “sister” sword was unearthed in Norway in 1888, giving a valuable clue to the Cawood Sword’s origin. Hanwei’s version of the sword replicates the lobated pommel and steeply down curved quillons of the hilt perfectly, while the wide-fullered blade is reproduced in 5160 high-carbon steel. Uesugi Katana

Uesugi Kenshin was one of feudal Japans most unique and honorable daimyo of Senkugo period. Being born Nageo Kagetora, a third or fourth son, his early years were those of quiet and study until his sickly older brother’s incompetence to rule caused family friends to encourage him to challenge his sibling’s station. After wrestling control from his brother and several well-planned alliances, adoption as heir of the Uesugi klan, some changes in titles in land and several military victories, he rose in power and became known by many names, but specifically the “Dragon of Echigo.” He became renowned for reforms in commerce and agriculture in securing his lands and raising the standard of life for his people.As the legendary Takeda Shingen expanded his territory and power, he soon found his borders under siege and thus began their great rivalry. Mostly just indecisive skirmishes in the beginning, their fourth encounter which would be their largest, the Battle of Kawanakajima, Kenshin employed a new strategy of rotating soldiers on the front line with fresh troops nearly winning the battle. So pitched was this battle Kenshin rode up to Shingen and slashed at him by which Takeda deflected with his famed war fan. Yet depending on whose statistics you believe; many scholars consider this encounter a draw.Such respect Uesugi had for Shingen, when Takeda broke with the Hojo clan who soon after boycotted the Kai Province of salt, Kenshin sent his rival salt from his own province with the message, “I do not fight with salt, but with the sword.” Even at Takeda Shingen’s death, Kenshin said “I have lost my good rival. We won't have a hero like that again!” But even after his rival’s death, Kenshin found a new one in the rising power of Oda Nobunaga. Continuing our series, this beautiful katana features the embossed likeness of Uesugi Kenshin replicated from Japanese artwork. The 27 1/4" forged T10 steel blade cuts as well as it looks. The fuchi and kashira are blackened with gold detailing. The gold dragon menuki are over laid with a black cotton handle wrap over real ray skin. Scottish Basket Hilt Backsword

It is likely that the blade of the original sword was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. The Basket-Hilt Backsword dates from about 1760 and has an unusual basket with twin engraved "horned beastie" plaques and a blade with twin fullers running most of its length. Again the original blade is German in origin but the blade and hilt are contemporary. The Basket-Hilt Backsword has a wire-wrapped ray skin handle and a cloth-covered leather basket liner. Longsword Tinker Pearce sharp

This two-handed longsword features a Type XVIIIa blade with a narrow fuller running approximately 1/3 its length. Typical of the late Medieval period this style of longsword exhibits fantastic cutting and thrust ability thanks to its gradual profile taper and central ridge. This version features a sharp blade made of Marquenched 5160 spring steel. The hilt is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Musashi XL Light Katana

Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Mounted in black, the Musashi Katana is faithful to the original down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray skin. The blade is hand-forged in high-carbon steel, with new geometry to enhance cutting ability. The XL Light blades feature the same geometry as those of the XL but incorporate deeply cut grooves (bo-hi) to reduce the weight of the blade while retaining most of it´s strength and cutting ability. Scottish Basket-Hilt Broadsword (Antiqued)

Although Basket-Hilt swords appeared throughout Britain from the mid-sixteenth century on, their association with the seventeenth and eighteenth century Scottish highlander has become legendary. Our Basket-Hilt Broadsword, replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-18th century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword, marked "Andrea Ferara", was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. The sword is available in both polished and antiqued finishes. Both hilts are crafted from stainless steel, to minimize maintenance, that of the normal version being polished while the "antiqued" version has a museum-quality patina. The high-carbon blade of the antiqued version is also lightly "antiqued" to promote authenticity. The grips of the broadswords are covered with wire-wrapped genuine rayskin and the basket liners are crafted in fabric-covered leather. The scabbards are leather-covered, black in the case of the normal version and brown for the antiqued sword. This sword comes with a sharp blade. 1881 Shaska Sabre

Viking Short-Bladed Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 1". Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Short Bladed Spear is typical of those of Celtic origin, imported into Scandinavia. Praying Mantis Katana

The Praying Mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is consequently a highly respected theme in Samurai swords. Built on our new L6/Bainite blade (detailed below) in the Shobu Zukuri style with Bo-Hi, and featuring superb koshirae, the Praying Mantis is a very desirable and functional piece. Bainite is a structure of high-carbon steel that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary Katana blade component for a number of years but its use has been restricted to a few top-class master smiths, due to the difficulties involved in performing the exacting heat treatment procedures necessary for the production of a Bainite blade body in combination with the very hard Martensite Yakiba (edge section) required for Katana blades. Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using billets of L-6 tool steel (a very tough high-carbon low-alloy steel) as a starting point. Blades are forged and shaped in the normal way, then carefully heat treated to achieve the required Bainite and Martensite structures before final polishing. Our new Dragonfly Katana possesses all the attributes that make a katana. An original distinctive style, with a thinner and lighter blade that is individually hand forged and folded. Our Dragonfly Katana features the blending of T-10 and 1055 steel. This new folded steel combination presents striking contrast between the layers and when polished reveals a highly visible hada.
