A few years back, Ed Calderon was able to host one of his most famous training courses at TOPS Knives and took the time to be a guest on TOPS Daily Grind. During his time in Idaho Falls, there were many conversations about edged tools and weapons. Ed, along with Leo (TOPS' president) agreed that a knife designed by Ed and produced by TOPS would be epic. This was the basis for the design that became El Pionero. TOPS is well-known for making hard-use tactical and survival knives. In recent years however, the lineup of models available through TOPS has opened to a very wide variety of cutlery. Hunting knives, EDC, and even kitchen cutlery. Now TOPS is ready to release their first filet knife.Finding a middle ground between the flexibility of a filet knife and the rigidity of boning knife, the TOPS Filet is reminiscent of a Japanese gokujo(which means “all-in-one”). It is multipurpose in nature and can be used to bone or filet. Puukkos are a style of knife originally developed in Scandinavia. Through the years, they have remained largely unchanged. Characteristically, they are Scandi ground knives with thick, round wooden handles. The original purpose behind the Silent Hero knife was to provide a mid-large sized tool to be used by a specialized interdiction unit that was combating rhino poachers in Africa. By the time Laci designed the Express he had been carrying large folders for self-defense in his waist band for years, sometimes overseas for security details, where firearms were not allowed. His goal was to bridge the gap between a large folder and a small fixed blade. In his words: “After attempting to use my folder in several emergencies, and having to use both hands to open the blade, even though I could open it with a flick of the wrist at home… I realized I needed to design a fixed blade. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to bring everybody down to my martial arts level. I’m sure there are badasses out there that can flip open a butterfly knife in a life-or-death situation… not me. The Silent Hero was designed by Anton Du Plessis, who at the time of the design was the Chief of Operations for the Specialized Interdiction Unit of the Silent Heroes Foundation. His task was to combat the poaching crisis in South Africa. This knife had to be durable, versatile, and able to fill Anton's needs in the field, which affected the design of the blade and the handle. It will definitely hold up to hard use. The Trailhead Kukri, designed by Jason Swain, is a modern take on a design that has been around for 400 years or more. Jason originally set out to design an EDC that he didn’t see anywhere else. He thought about his days as a biker and his experience with knives. He has always been a fan of karambit style knives, but also a fan of kukris. At first glance, those two don’t necessarily mix. TOPS is famous for many things. Three that are important to us are differentially heat-treated 1095 blades, overbuilt unique designs, and working with outside designers. The A-Klub hits all three of those categories squarely. It is also the first to be released by TOPS which was designed by a woman. Amanda Kaye is probably best known for having appeared on Discovery Channel's Naked and Afraid.Aside from her TV appearances, Amanda Kayne has been an avid hunter and student of Native American primitive skills. She is no stranger to hard work. So it seems fitting that the first female-designed TOPS knife would be a large, heavy-working tool. Many of the design features came from Native American influences. Ana has worked at TOPS since about 2012. She has filled many roles in the company during her tenure, from cord wrapping handles to purchasing everything (parts, pieces, tools, even paper towels) for the company. During the time that TOPS Knives' General Manager Craig Powell has been with the company, he has become more and more interested in everything to do with knives. He has dabbled in making a few knives with a ton of help from Leo Espinoza (TOPS' President). One weekend, while he was working on a leather sheath project that he wanted to do, he came up with the idea to make a kiridashi-style knife close to the traditional Japanese style (with a sort of chisel ground blade) that he could use specifically for cutting leather for projects and other things around the house. Eventually, he got it done. Around the same time, Craig had also attended a couple of Martial Blades Concepts classes with a local instructor (Adam Boyce of Spartan Mode). So, of course, he realized that it would make a solid self-defense tool if needed. At this point, the design was tweaked to include the finger ring. With such a narrow tip and a straight edge, many useful cuts are made easily. Stabbing will give great penetration, and EDC tasks that involve pulling cuts will be precise. Even fine, detailed cuts for woodworking will be a breeze. The handle has the perfect radius which makes the knife comfortable to hold in forward or reverse grips. The beta loop that comes included on the Kydex sheath is easy to remove and reposition so that the knife can be carried appendix, scout, horizontal, vertical, IWB, OWB, and even strapped to MOLLE gear or packs. The Filipino culture and the martial arts culture in particular has a deep, rich history. One of those tools is the Ginunting. Possibly derived from a Binangon (which was used as a farm or yard tool), the Ginunting is a powerful weapon. Adam Boyce, aka Spartan mode, is an Idaho native and friend of TOPS. In 2018, Adam approached TOPS because he had an opportunity to be a contestant on the Forged in Fire spinoff show Knife or Death. The Wood Nymph was brought to TOPS by Bushcraft Kelso. If you’ve ever met Kelso in person or had a chance to talk with him about his gear, this design will make perfect sense to you. Kelly McCulley spent seven and a half years in the US Army. During his time in the service, he searched for the right knife to meet his needs as a combat tool that could do the duty of a utility knife, too. In all his time in the service, he never quite found the one that would fit what he wanted in a combat knife. Sound familiar? It's one of the same reasons that TOPS Knives was founded and one of the reasons that TOPS produces such a variety of models. Around 2010, Kelly started designing knives that his fellow servicemen and women could rely on as they were deployed. He has been making those knives since and has some smart designs under his belt.The Missile Strike is a great combination of combat and utility. Its narrow blade with long swedge allows for great penetrating stabs (the swedge can be sharpened upon request). The 0.25" thickness provides enough weight to add some power in stabbing, slashing, and when smashing using the pointed pommel. There is a very generous finger guard to ensure that your hand will not slip onto the blade.Given that the knife will likely be used as a utility tool more often than not, there are features that were included to facilitate that use.
