Tops Ranger Bootlegger

Design by requirements is the motto of the well-known knife factory TOPS situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Idaho. As many of its members had a long career in military or police and are still well connected to these, the enterprise has a high official input. Before being serialized, every model is tested in the field for a minimum of six months. These ultra-sturdy knife blades are mostly manufactured from 1095 carbon steel. A special abrasion-resistant powder coating (developed exclusively for TOPS) is applied that makes the blade corrosion-resistant. This so called traction coating survived for seven days without damage the especially challenging US military salt spray test. Because of their sturdiness and reliability, TOPS knives are a vital part of the equipment and especially valued by the US army in today’s crisis areas. All TOPS models are made in the USA! The Ranger Bootlegger is an extremely slim knife that can be carried very comfortably around the calves with the special sheath made of Combat Ballistic Nylon. The TOPS CUMA Kage is an honest-to-goodness short sword. It was designed by Sijo Waysun Johnny Tsai, a true expert in martial arts and edged weapons. The Silent Hero was designed by Anton Du Plessis, who at the time of the design was the Chief of Operations for the Specialized Interdiction Unit of the Silent Heroes Foundation. His task was to combat the poaching crisis in South Africa. This knife had to be durable, versatile, and able to fill Anton's needs in the field, which affected the design of the blade and the handle. It will definitely hold up to hard use. And with a weight of only 12 oz, you'll be able to use the knife without getting fatigued too quickly.There is a lanyard hole in the handle along with another in the finger guard. This is meant to allow the user to add a safety cord in order to improve the grip on the handle, which already allows for a solid grip. Every year, TOPS’ President Leo Espinoza makes himself a knife for hunting season. This tradition is something that helps him maintain his creativity by making something that is specifically for him, not for the general public. Dicer Chefs Knife

Now a tradition at TOPS Knives, an employee design contest takes place each year. TOPS asks its employees to design a knife for specific use with some required specs. In 2016, it was a hatchet. In 2017, it was a chef’s knife. And that is how the Dicers were born. Jesus Arellano has been the graphics manager at TOPS since 2013. Nearly all of the photographs on the TOPS website, social media accounts, and advertisements are either taken by Jesus or edited by him. Out of over 20 submissions, his design for a chef’s knife was selected as the one we liked the best.So the Dicer 8 chef’s knife was the first in the series to be designed. The blade is roughly 7.75” in overall cutting edge with a little more belly than a standard chef’s knife and is made using CPM S35VN steel. The premium steel will hold its edge better than most kitchen knives and take a very keen edge. The handles were made to be comfortable with a lot of contouring, especially where the thumb and index finger would grip for a pinch grip. Field Dog

Ana has worked at TOPS since about 2012. She has filled many roles in the company during her tenure, from cord wrapping handles to purchasing everything (parts, pieces, tools, even paper towels) for the company. So she is familiar with every TOPS knife out there right now and has ordered the materials to make it happen. One night in 2019, while Leo was traveling for a show, she cracked open a beer, sat down at the table, and started drawing a knife. It’s funny because that is not something she normally does. There wasn’t a specific type of knife she was thinking about or something that she wanted to emulate, but she must have been inspired because that knife ended up becoming the Field Dog. The flowing lines and curves make this knife excellent for processing fish, birds, and small game, especially for those who like a pointy tip on their hunting knives. The handle design/materials morphed through the prototyping process. Kelly McCulley spent seven and a half years in the US Army. During his time in the service, he searched for the right knife to meet his needs as a combat tool that could do the duty of a utility knife, too. In all his time in the service, he never quite found the one that would fit what he wanted in a combat knife. Sound familiar? The Brush Wolf was designed while considering the diverse environments coyotes traverse. They can be spotted deep in the forest, open fields, deserts, grasslands, swamps, cities, and even the alley behind your local Starbucks. The Brush Wolf was designed by Aaron and Nate Morgan of Houghton Era after a few tracking excursions in some viaducts in Detroit, MI. The two brothers grew up skateboarding there and became attracted to the remnants of coyote activity they were finding at some of the skate spots. Coyotes are known by many names, Song Dogs, Tricksters, Shape shifters, gods of the threshold. It's a full-tang, 0.375" thick piece of 1075, so it is not meant to be a light-weight ax. The 4.5" cutting edge is large enough to perform chopping tasks that most smaller hatchets will not accomplish. The hammer on the back end is also hardened to be used when you need to smash instead of cut. His goal was to bridge the gap between a large folder and a small fixed blade. Puukkos are a style of knife originally developed in Scandinavia. Through the years, they have remained largely unchanged. Characteristically, they are Scandi ground knives with thick, round wooden handles.
