Our new improved Japanese Training Swords are closely modeled after our world-famous Warrior series swords. Featuring an intricately detailed imitation cord wrap grip - molded in high impact polypropylene - they offer superior grip and comfort as well as more realistic training potential for the modern Martial Artist. Hundreds of years ago, the Japanese discovered a simple truth; that to become a good swordsman you'll have to practice, a great deal. To become a great swordsman you’ll have to practice with a "live blade". And during the period between "good" and "great", you should spend your time building your skills and confidence enough to wield a razor sharp Katana safely and effectively. To accomplish this, the Japanese relied on a simple wooden sword called a "bokken" for much of their training. It was made from the super tough wood of the Japanese White Oak, a wood they called Kashi. The swords produced from this wood had the advantage of replicating the size, weight and feel of a steel sword, while minimizing the possibility of causing grievous or permanent injury to those who used it. Authentic Kashi wood Bokkens are still used today, but are becoming quite costly. They also have the disadvantages, being made of wood, that they may rot, crack split or splinter. Bokken ("wooden sword") is the Japanese term in kenjutsu for a katana shaped out of wood. Used to train samurai in feudal Japan, it is now used as a training weapon in various Japanese sword arts. Some other martial arts (and all pedants) call it a bokuto ("wooden sword").A suburito is a bokken designed for suburi. Suburi, literally "bare cutting", are solo cutting exercises. Suburito are thicker and heavier than normal bokken so that you have to develop either good technique, strong muscles or both to wield one. The Suburito is a specialized ancient training weapon that’s meant to simulate the weight of a real Japanese sword. Primarily intended for solo practice or cutting drills, it inspires respect, as it hits with terrific force. Our interpretation was inspired by a wooden Suburito in Akido 5th Dan, Andrew Demko’s private collection. Our President, Lynn C. Thompson trained with it for several months, and resolved to create one for Cold Steel. Kiai

In order to improve one's skills in Japanese martial arts such as Iaido, Aikido, Kenjutsu or Kendo, a wooden sword, the Bokken, is usually used for training purposes. Instead of using sharp blades like a Katana or Wakizashi, the practice sword with a blunt edge and rounded tip is a much less risky way of practising various forms of techniques. As a refreshing alternative to the Bokken, the Magnum Kiai combines the best of both worlds. Thanks to modern materials, attention to detail and true-to-life dimensions in terms of size and weight, the training sword can be used to perform everything from partner exercises to fixed sequences of movements (kata) in a realistic manner. Escrima Stick

Since 1980, when he first read Guru Dan Inosanto´s book, "The Filipino Martial Arts", our President, Lynn C. Thompson, has diligently studied and trained in these disciplines. Lynn´s extensive sparing experiences, combined with his study and training had an immeasurable impact in shaping Cold Steel into the company it is today. Our brand new Cold Steel Escrima Stick resembles a traditional rattan stick in length, weight, and cross section, it is however, much more durable because it is injection molded from super tough black polypropylene. It measures 32" long and is 1" in diameter and weighs approximately 12 ounces. Unlike rattan, it resists mildew, and won´t dry out, warp, crack splinter or shrink, and with the use of a saw, it can easily be modified to any length. Escrima Stick

Eskrima or Escrima refers in a general way to Filipino martial arts. Other terms in common international usage are Kali and Arnis de Mano; occasionally the abbreviation FMA is used. Many different systems of Eskrima exist. In most systems, skills with weapons and with empty hands are developed at the same time, using training methods designed to emphasize the common elements. Practitioners of these arts are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably. Most Eskrima systems include fighting with a variety of weapons, striking with hands and feet (kickboxing), grappling, throwing, biting, and all the other skills that would be needed for a warrior's complete training in the old days of tribal warfare. Perhaps the only major exceptions are that the skills needed for fighting effectively in groups are being lost, and traditionally, Eskrima would have been taught alongside Hilot, a Filipino system of healing and medicine that has now virtually disappeared.
