A Renaissance bum roll is a crescent of cotton fabric filled with fabric padding. It has a tie at each end. The ties are used to bind the bum roll around the hips to make them even more attractively wide and support the skirts on top of them. Upper class women would also wear bum rolls on top of their farthingales in the Renaissance.
