In the High Middle Ages smith were able to produce better works. In the 10th century AD the first conical helmets with nasal were crafted from one single plate of iron. In addition is was customary to forge a nasal widening at its end. Sometimes this type of nasal helmet is wrongly referred to as Norman helmet. In the 12th century cylindrical formed helmets started to arise. At first those helmets also featured a nasal, which was however quickly replaced by fixed visors with eye slits and air slots. This type of helmet was the base of the great helm which itself was adjusted to the human head form in the course of time and therefore was no longer cylindrical. About the same time helm types like the simple iron hat and the bascinet evolved. The great helm nevertheless was the most effective headgear of the European knight until the 14th century. Fleur-de-Lis Great Helm

The great helm, also known as barrel or pot helmet was used from the early 13th to the 15th century. New combat techniques which developed during the crusades and the use of heavy lances forced the knights to resort to a fully armoured headgear. The cylindrical pot helmets, which had only narrow eye slits were frequently worn as a second helmet above a bascinet or mail cowl, making penetration by sword or lance almost impossible. Our great helm fleur-de-lis is handmade from four 18 gauge carbon steel plates riveted together. The cross shaped brass fittings reinforcing the nasal area and the eye slits follow the fleur-de-lis design pattern. Air holes on the front provide ventilation. The helmet weighs approximately 5.7 lbs.

Norman Helmet

The Normans (lit. "Northmen") were Scandinavian invaders (especially Jutish Vikings) who began to occupy the northern area of France now known as Normandy in the latter half of the 9th century. Under the leadership of Hrolf Ganger, who adopted the French name Rollo, they swore allegiance to the king of France (Charles the Simple) and received the small and lower Seine area from him in 911 which they later expanded to become the Duchy of Normandy. The Norman people adopted Christianity and the French language and created a new cultural identity separate from that of their Scandinavian forebears and French neighbours. Norman culture, like that of many other migrant communities, was particularly enterprising and adaptable. For a time, it led them to occupy widely dispersed territories throughout Europe. In Eastern Europe this development, and rapid expansion of Vikings and their descendants, was paralleled by the Varangians (Rus' (people)) in Kievan Rus'. This helmet is based off of the great helmet of Sir Richard Pembridge, who died in 1375. The origin is now in the collection of the tiol Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. The crosses at the bottom of the helmet in the front were used as attachment points for chains. These helped to prevent the helmet from being dislodged if it was struck by a lance. This was a common style in the 14th century. Another well known example is the helmet of Edward the Black Prince, who faought alongside Sir Richard at the battle of Poiters, France, in 1356. Tudor Close Helmet

This is the classic form most often associated with the image of a knight. During Henry the VIIIs wars in France (1522-1523), this form of helmet would have been in use on both sides. This excellent reproduction by the fine craftsmen of Windlass Steelcrafts® is fully wearable. The term Close Helm refers to the fact that this type locks firmly around the head for complete protection, with a very narrow field of vision to expose the eyes as little as possible. The visor is pierced with key-holes on both sides for good air flow during combat. The lower before section is split into two overlapping pieces that are hinged at the sides and hook together at the chin while the visor locks down firmly over it. German Gothic Salade with Bevor

The last half of the 15th Century saw armour reach its apex in beauty, in both form and function. This type of armour would have been a common site on the battlefields of The War of the Roses. Suitable for foot or mounted combat, this two-tiered helmet was prized by both knights and men-at-arms. The Salade (or English Sallet), which possibly originated in France or Burgundy, was constructed with a tail to protect the back of the head and neck. This version sits flush on a bevor, which protects the chin and throat. The original is believed to be English and dates from about 1480. This replica features a moveable visor and a bevor with falling buff like the original. Forged of 18 gauge steel, both the Salade and bevor are fully lined and wearable.

The Spanish Horse Helmet of the 16th century by Marto of Toledo Spain is a replica reproduction of helmets used by mounted knights during the reign of Charles V and Philip II, today part of the collection of the Real Armeria (Royal Armory) in Madrid. The Spanish Horse Helmet is made of steel and characterized by a large beak shaped visor that covers the face entirely leaving naked only the two eye slits. Jousting Helm Stechhelm

Nuremberg, Germany, C. 1490-1520. Original on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Bashford Dean Memorial Collection). Jousting emerged during the 12th C. from the military use of the lance by the mounted knight. During the latter part of the Middle Ages, jousting gained popularity in numerous kingdoms and was transformed into a lucrative event. Knights and nobles gained considerable wealth, prestige and land during such bouts, while merchants and artisans benefited from the ‘games’ by the distension of neighboring populations. While Jousting spread widely across the Christian kingdom, Pope Innocent II, in 1130, at a church council at Clermont, denounced all forms of ‘Noble’ tournaments and forbade Christian burials for Nobles killed in them. According to ecclesiastical ideas of morality, the ‘games’ distracted the aristocracy from focusing on more acceptable warfare, in defense of Christianity.
