Having been equipped with the Montefortino helmet for centuries, around the time of the Augustan reign the roman army switched to the imperial- gaulic helmet of the Weisenau type. Its distinguishing features are the protective bar across the brow, intended to deflect or cushion heavy blows, the ear cut outs and the sizeable cheek pieces protecting the facial area.
This specific roman centurion helmet - a Wiesenau helmet type imperial -gaulic H (Augsburg)- has a right angled neck guard and elaborate brass decorations. It also has clamps to accommodate a crest, a symbol of the rank of centurion. The inside is lined with leather and has an inner circle of 24". Made from 18 gauge steel.
