For many centuries these uniform shoulder doublings were worn in combination with the lorica hamata (mail shirt). They were placed around the neck like a U- shaped collar and fixed to the mail shirt with four rivets in the back. On the front, the pieces were tied with a string or held by a clasp. Whereas the lorica hamata was used from the days of the early Republic to the fall of the Roman Empire, the doublings went out of fashion towards the end of the 1st century.
