Product information "Viking Short-Bladed Spear"

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 1". Spearheads only are supplied.

The Viking Short Bladed Spear is typical of those of Celtic origin, imported into Scandinavia. The short blade, inherently stiffer and more resistant to bending or breaking, was capable of piercing any body armour of the period.

Viking Throwing Spear

The Nordic warrior frequently carried several light Throwing Spears into combat. This style displays the narrow, sharply pointed head designed to pierce mail. Several spears might be carried in the shield hand in a charge. These were thrown as the distance closed, leaving the warrior free to use his sword or axe in hand-to-hand fighting. Round Ended Butt Cap

With the discovery of metal, spears became much more effective. In just about all cultures metal butt caps were used to protect the base of the shaft, and to add balance to the overall weapon. This butt cap can be used for any spear since the beginning of the Iron Age. The cap is well made of mild steel, gives an improved appearance and balances the spear. Greek Spearhead

The Greek spearhead was the integral part of the principal weapon of the Hoplite- a heavily armed foot soldier whose principal weapon was "the long shadowed spear." It was a weapon that varied in length from 6 to 18 feet, and could be used both as spear and pike. Shorter versions were used as throwing weapons. The earlier versions were made of bronze, but iron, once it was available, became the material of choice for the Greek spearhead.
