Initially, the Knights Templar were a military order – and a wildly successful one, with stores of their mounted knights breaking much superior forces. However, as the Order expanded, they began branching out in new and innovative directions. The Order became an early form of bank, able to receive deposits, hold valuables and funds, and provide loans – with interest, previously forbidden to church organisations. This newfound ability became the Order’s primary focus, and their activities changed to match. Many wealthy and powerful people found themselves in debt to a military order that was above the law in every sense of the word. One such individual was King Phillip IV of France, who was deeply indebted to the Order. King Phillip initiated the fall of the Order in 1307, arresting many Knights Templar and torturing them into admitted to heresy. Facing political pressure as a result of the scandal, Pope Clement ordered the Order dissolved in 1312. Many of their members were executed, their assets were seized and distributed to other orders of the Church, and the last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake in 1314. The greatest military force of the Crusader era was gone.
Despite this fall from grace, the Knights Templar have captured the imagination of modern sword collectors and history enthusiasts. Their weapons have been the subject of much interest, and while many of the original weapons were destroyed and or thrown into rivers following the dissolution of the Order, a handful of good examples survived. Numerous photographs of the original Two Handed Templar sword are published in “The Journal of Arms and Armour Society”, (Oakeshott, E. “A war sword of the XIVth Century in the Guildhall Museum”). The sword of the crusaders and the Templar Knights, in their crucifix form, exemplifies the archetypical Sword of the middle ages.
The embellishing of the pommel, with its decorative cross, was common on Templar swords. As a medieval weapon, the Two handed Templar sword is an imposing, powerful yet elegant piece. Dieses Schwert war in seiner Durchschlagskraft vielleicht das wirkungsvollste aller Zeiten, jedenfalls war es das konstruktiv perfekteste seiner Zeit. Zwei scharfe Schneiden, die Spitze fein wie ein Hornissen-Stachel, mit entsprechender Kraft angewandt wohl auch ein Kettenhemd durchdringend. Neben seiner phänomenalen Klingen-Geometrie, die Stabilität bei optimalem Handling bot, wurden auch die Parierstange und der Knauf als Kampf-Elemente mit einbezogen. Erstere ist sehr stabil und an den Enden kantig, schützte nicht nur die Hand vor Hieben feindlicher Klingen, sondern konnte im Nahkampf als Dorn-artige Verlängerung der Faust bei Schlägen angewandt werden. Der Knauf ist extra massiv und schwer, tariert das Schwert aus und wurde als wirkungsvolles Schlag-Element eingesetzt. Eine multifunktionale Kampfwaffe also. Es in seiner Art wirkungsvoll einsetzen zu können, bedurfte allerdings einer gewaltigen Körperkraft und Ausdauer! Jedem Mann unserer Tage fallen nach ein paar Bewegungen mit diesem Schwert die Arme runter!! Man darf sich einmal vergegenwärtigen, welch kraftvolle und durchtrainierte Kerle die Ritter von damals sein mussten, die bei einer Körpergröße von um 165 cm Kämpfe auf Leben und Tod mit so einem Bi-Händer ausfochten!!! Diese Replik von DARKSWORD ARMORY ist ein phänomenales Teil!! Es dürfte wohl genau den Eindruck in den Händen seines heutigen Führers vermitteln, den schon der Tempelritter des frühen 14. Jhds beim Berühren und Händeln verspürte. Seine Gediegenheit und Aura beeindrucken unglaublich. Seine Klinge ist perfekt gerade, lediglich an seiner Oberfläche zeigen sich minimale Unebenheiten, die aber wohl auch dem Original eigen waren. Seine Verarbeitung wirkt, als würde man es am 25. Juni 1339 frisch vom Schwert-Schmied nahe London abholen. Sehr original also, soweit ein relativ Unwissender wie ich das sagen kann. Ich habe dieses Schwert im Zustand "scharf" bestellt. Und es ist leidlich scharf. Von echter Präzision des Schärf-Dienstes sollte man also nicht ausgehen. Es schneidet Weiches. Aber zum Durchschlagen einer Wassermelone sollte es reichen... Resumé: Fantastische Replik eines Schwertes mit unglaublichem Power-Faktor, wenn man es in Händen hält! Man sieht die alte Macht nicht nur, man spürt sie. Perfekt für jeden, der schon zu Kindestagen von so einem Schwert träumte! Man holt es sich und lässt sich in ferner Zukunft damit begraben, weil es Teil von einem wird. So wie damals...

A real two handed sword with character, with hammermarks, deeply etched, a bit heavy, but handles very good, is strong and in all excellent.
