Viking Throwing Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. Greek Spearhead

The Greek spearhead was the integral part of the principal weapon of the Hoplite- a heavily armed foot soldier whose principal weapon was "the long shadowed spear." It was a weapon that varied in length from 6 to 18 feet, and could be used both as spear and pike. Shorter versions were used as throwing weapons. The earlier versions were made of bronze, but iron, once it was available, became the material of choice for the Greek spearhead.
