While most tomahawks are chopping tools there was a less popular alternative known as a spontoon hawk. Made with a blade expressly designed for piercing it was capable of delivering deep puncture wounds that were quite lethal. Often found with a sloping or diamond shaped point and sharpened on both sides the Spontoon hawk offered little to no utility value but was undeniable a fearsome and brutally effective weapon. Today modern made spontoon hawks are extremely rare (outside of the cheapest quality imports) so we decided to remedy the situation with our own models. Available in faux pipe hawk style they feature classic sloping and diamond shaped blades that can be fully sharpened!

One of the truths of close quarter combat is that a rifle, shotgun or musket can be an improvised club in the absence of suitable ammunition or a bayonet. It´s also true that an 8-10 lb. rifle, grasped by its long barrel and swung with both hands hits like a freight train and, if it doesn´t break, will crush bones like dry twigs and pulp flesh into jelly. American Indians in the early sixteenth century observed these facts and wasted no time in fashioning their own gunstock war clubs. These were made of specially chosen straight grain hard woods like Maple, Ash, Oak, Hickory or Hornbeam and weighed from two to three pounds. They hit with remarkable force and proved to be extremely lethal weapons as their hitting power was often enhanced by the addition of a short lance point or one or more knife blades. In fact, the Gunstock war club became so popular it soon migrated West to the Great Plains and even the Pacific coast where it endured as a weapon clear into the 1880´s and as a ceremonial and dance weapon to this very day. While there are a fascinating variety of historical examples we could have reproduced, ours was custom designed by blade smith Rich Mc Donald. He incorporated all the best features from our favorite clubs including the ridged centerline, a short lance point, and the classic "Fawn´s Foot" handle. To avoid the risk of cross grain breakage, we have abandoned the traditional hardwoods in favor of Polypropylene. As you may know, this material is highly resistant to shock and is practically unbreakable making it particularly suitable for use in this weapon. And as an added bonus, this material is highly resistant to the elements and won´t warp, rot, shrink crack or splinter the way wood does. For those interested in re-enacting various periods of our frontier history, we have given our weapon a very realistic wood grain finish. This means you can easily customize your club with "cut outs", brass studs, tacks, feathers, horse hair falls or the paint of your choice.

There are two kinds of Celtic Medieval swords. The most common is the “long” sword, usually comprising a stylized anthropomorphic hilt made from organic material, such as wood, bone, or horn. The second type is a “short” sword with either an abstract or a true anthropomorphic hilt of copper alloy, such as bronze. The Anthropomorphic Celtic sword, is of the second type.
The Celtic sword symbolized power, strength, honor and the ultimate glory in battle. The fine quality and extraordinary skills required to produce these swords rendered them extremely expensive and, hence, reserved for the warrior elites and tribal leader. The sword was often buried with its owner or thrown in the ocean as a gift to the gods or spirits.
The Celts were a nomadic people who populated Europe and the British Isles from the 5th C., BC to 50 AD. From this diverse group the Scottish, Irish and Welsh cultures developed. Their artwork was distinctive and extended to their weapons. The Anthropomorphic Celtic sword is an example of such.
The Celtic sword is a short yet graceful weapon. As with all our swords, The Anthropomorphic Celtic sword is hand forged from 5160 High Carbon Steel and Dual hardened to a Rockwell of 60 at the edge and 48-50 at the core. The classic short Celtic diamond shaped blade is and exceptional thrusting weapon which has famed the Celts for their ferociousness and tenacity in battle.
The Celtic Anthropomorphic sword is based on two surviving examples found at the British Museum. Evolving from the Roman spatha, this style of battle ready sword combined a short, diamond shaped blade with a bronze hilt. The guard and pommel form the shape of a man, hence the name “Anthropomorphic.” The Pommel is the head and arms, while the guard represent its legs. The Celtic sword is a true testament to the Celtic people’s artistic sense and the focal point of artistry which stands at the very core of the Celtic culture.
To create the Celtic Anthropomorphic sword, we carefully studied two original examples on display at the British Museum. Given the pivotal role of art for the Celtic people, we felt that our recreation of the sword should highlight this magnificent ability while preserving the swords primary function. Namely, being a well-balanced and functional medieval weapon. Superbly balanced at the hilt, the Celtic Anthropomorphic sword is not only a work of art, it is a deadly medieval weapon which staved off the Roman invaders through centuries of warfare.

An assassin moves quickly in the night, his short blade stabs out, and he is on his way while his victim is still realizing he has been mortally wounded. A woman is receiving unwanted attention from a large, smelly man, and suddenly pulls a short blade from her gown or corset. If these scenes sound familiar to you, then you have probably seen the Stiletto in action on screen or in the pages of historical or fantasy fiction.
The Stylet or Stiletto originated in Italy during the 15th century. It is the smallest of daggers, easily concealed, lightest in weight, ideal for surprise attacks. Not meant for dueling or slashing, these daggers were exclusively thrusting weapons, with a strong triangular sectional blade to aid in punching through armor and flesh. The dimensions of the stilettos made these daggers a favorite among criminals and assassins, though they were later popular for self-defense. Darksword Armory is pleased to bring a functional Stiletto to the market, though we must request that our customers refrain from any assassination attempts with it.

The Cinquedea [Ching-kwi-dey-uh] has held a long fascination for us here at Cold Steel. It gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for noblemen walking through the narrow alleyways and walled cities of Italy. A blade worn exclusively for civilian self-defense, it was essentially the precursor to the civilian side sword and the rapier – and yet, this instrument of personal protection seems to have owed much of its design to fashion as it did to the cut and thrust of mortal combat!
Surviving examples of these unusual short handled and steeply tapered blades are often highly embellished and ornate. With etched or gilded blades and deep multiple fullers that border on jewelry rather than weaponry – but beneath the romanticisms of high renaissance fashion lay a tool made with purpose. A wide, stiff cut and thrust blade that could be brought into play in confined spaces, and deliver a mortal wound!
Our interpretation of the Cinquedea is made from expertly heat treated 1055 Carbon steel with a highly engraved guard and pommel, and a hand-carved rosewood grip. The Cinquedea is sold complete with a leather scabbard with engraved steel throat and chape.
