Uhtred of Bebbanburg, born the son of a Saxon nobleman but captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own, is forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing. His loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane?

A natural warrior, Uhtred is a leader of men, fearless and instinctive. On a quest to reclaim his birthright, his homeland of Bebbanburg taken from him by his treacherous uncle, Aelfric, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path if he is to play his part in the birth of a nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.
