We have long admired the timeless good looks and pure functional design of the American Rifleman’s Knife. This rare blade was originally issued in extremely limited numbers, and has the distinction of being the first knife officially designed for, and purchased by, the U.S. Army back in 1849. Our blade takes inspiration from an antique in the private collection of our company President Lynn C Thompson, and while our blade is not an exact replica, it features many of the design nuances that make this knife such a classic! It’s big, stout spear point blade is stiff enough to oppose even much larger weapons, making it an ideal complimentary knife to carry and use alongside a saber or cutlass. Plus, its beefy 12” blade and solid guard make a more than capable stand-alone blade in its own right! It’s easy to see why it was chosen as a back-up blade for our nation’s riflemen. The Cold Steel 1849 Rifleman’s Knife is hand forged from 1085 High Carbon steel, with a solid brass guard and beautiful Rosewood handle scales that encapsulate the sturdy full tang. Designed by Cold Steel President Lynn C Thompson, and bearing his name, the Thompson Saber was created to Lynn's exact specifications. Most military sabers are effective for cutting and thrusting, but they can be heavy and are challenging to wield with precision for any length of time. Gladius Trainer

The best of the world's sword fighters have known a simple truth for ages... if you want to become a reasonably good sword fighter you should endeavor to learn sword fighting techniques, footwork and the basic stances. However, if you want to be a master at sword fighting you have to eventually start fighting with a "live blade". If your ultimate goal is to wield a razor sharp sword safely and effectively, you need to train with a sword that approximates the size, feel and heft of a live blade, yet minimizes the possibility of causing grievous, permanent, or life-threatening injury to yourself or your training partner. This concept was implemented by the ancient Romans, who used dull wooden swords to train their Gladiators and soldiers. And Japanese Samurai used a wooden training sword that was called a Bokken. It is an elegant solution to a vexing problem and effective enough to still be used today. The only problem is that a wooden sword can rot, crack, chip or splinter and eventually become useless.
