Sword reproduction, made of metal with a lined and removable plastic scabbard.

The cross and the pommel of the sword bear an inscription in vulgar Latin that means: "Kept by a dragoon that does not sleep, in the name of the truth".

The sword was generally the preferred weapon of the medieval knights for their combats. The owners liked to personalize it - some even received names - and the sword was considered both a weapon and a symbol because the blade and hilt are cross-shaped.

The most common sword was the so-called bastard sword or "of hand and average", straight and with double edge, whose length oscillated between 100 and 120 cm, and weighed between 1200 and 2000 grams, which allowed an agile handling in the battlefield.

Other larger swords were the so-called long sword (longsword), upright, “mandoble” or broadsword, which could reach two meters or more and weigh up to four kilograms. They were designed to be used with both hands and the forcefulness of their blows caused terrible damage, although their use and transportation were complicated and made them unmanageable.

The Middle Ages is the historical period of Western civilization, between the fifth century and the fifteenth century. Conventionally, it begins round the year 476, with the fall of the Roman West Empire, and it ends in 1492, with the discovery of America. The sword was the most personal weapon in this period, the most prestigious and the most versatile in hand-to-hand combats.

Medieval knights were important characters during this era. Their practice skills with weapons included the handling of the sword with both hands, the axe, the mace, the dagger and the lance. A gentleman was expected to be a guard of the castle and a support for his feudal lord in the wars.

15th Century Longsword

The longsword, often called a hand-and-half, saw a great deal of service as a weapon of war, but was also employed a great deal as a civilian weapon of self- defense. Coupled with a dagger, the longsword was an excellent defense against robbers, thieves, footpads, assassins and even some of the robber bands that might roam the countryside. A good serviceable point allowed it to be used for thrusting, and a medium weight allowed it to be used easily and carried with equal ease. This weight also allowed it to be used with one hand with a dagger in the other. But when needed, it could be gripped with both hands for a very powerful cut. Pommel and guard are steel. Grip is wood wrapped with leather and wire. A beautiful and very functional sword. A scabbard is included.
