Coifs were basically hoods of mail. These were worn over a padding arming cap. They helped protect the neck and the upper shoulder area. Coifs were common in the early Medieval era. This style includes a ventail, which is pulled across the face in oder to provide more protection. It is secured with leather ties.

The hilt of the Norman Sword is also reminiscent of many surviving originals with upturned, spatulated quillions, leather-over-wood grip and a modified "cocked hat" pommel. This pommel shape was specially chosen because it allows more room for the hand, while counter balancing the blade and serving as a weapon in its own right.
