Our copy is based on the origin kept at Metropolitan Museum and is of 14th Century. An identical example is also pictured and described in " A Record of European Armour and Arms" by Sir Guy Francis Laking, in volume III at page 10, plate 748. This dagger which was in the collection of Sir Guy Francis Laking and is described as having been found in Germany near Frankfurt am Main and is dated by Mr. Laking as early 15th C. In 1118 Hugh de Payens and eight other secular knights took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and pledged their lives to the Holy Land for the defence of Christian pilgrims. The king of Jerusalem, Baldwin II, gave this group a place to live. They were settled in the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. After which they became known as Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonis, or Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon. More commonly known as the Knights Templar. This was the beginning of what would become the most powerful military order in the world until their downfall in 1307. Our surcoat represents what a Knight of the Temple would have worn.
