Es ist richtig, dass eine Kohlenstoffstahlklinge niemals mit der blanken Hand angefasst werden soll, weil dies schwer zu beseitigende Spuren hinterlassen kann. Auch muß solch eine Klinge regelmäßig gepflegt und eingeölt werden. Jedoch ist es nicht nötig, dafür extra Nelkenöl zu benutzen. Die Japaner taten dies, weil sie keine entsprechende Öle auf Mineralölbasis hatten. Moderne,dünnflüssige Öle tun den Job genauso gut und können länger auf der Klinge bleiben.
