Kamakura Tachi

The Kamakura period (1185-1333) was a crucial epoch in the history of Japan. It is characterized by the first military government (shogunate), which arosed by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1192. The name of this era is derived from the former seat of government, which was in the city of Kamakura (about 50 km southwest of Tokyo). Together with armor (Yoroi) and Combat Knife (Tanto) the Tachi was usually worn on the battlefield.
