Bokken ("wooden sword") is the Japanese term in kenjutsu for a katana shaped out of wood. Used to train samurai in feudal Japan, it is now used as a training weapon in various Japanese sword arts. Some other martial arts (and all pedants) call it a bokuto ("wooden sword").
A suburito is a bokken designed for suburi. Suburi, literally "bare cutting", are solo cutting exercises. Suburito are thicker and heavier than normal bokken so that you have to develop either good technique, strong muscles or both to wield one. Their weight does however tend to make them poorly balanced, consequently they are not used for paired practise.
Miyamoto Musashi was famed for his use of the bokken in actual combat.

Our new improved Japanese Training Swords are closely modeled after our world-famous Warrior series swords. Featuring an intricately detailed imitation cord wrap grip - molded in high impact polypropylene - they offer superior grip and comfort as well as more realistic training potential for the modern Martial Artist.
Hundreds of years ago, the Japanese discovered a simple truth; that to become a good swordsman you'll have to practice, a great deal. To become a great swordsman you’ll have to practice with a "live blade". And during the period between "good" and "great", you should spend your time building your skills and confidence enough to wield a razor sharp Katana safely and effectively.
To accomplish this, the Japanese relied on a simple wooden sword called a "bokken" for much of their training. It was made from the super tough wood of the Japanese White Oak, a wood they called Kashi. The swords produced from this wood had the advantage of replicating the size, weight and feel of a steel sword, while minimizing the possibility of causing grievous or permanent injury to those who used it.
Authentic Kashi wood Bokkens are still used today, but are becoming quite costly. They also have the disadvantages, being made of wood, that they may rot, crack split or splinter. Cold Steel's solution to these dilemmas was to design a synthetic substitute, low in price and impervious to the elements.
Our Bokken and our new Wakazashi Bokken are made of the heaviest grade polypropylene available and closely duplicate a real Katana and Wakazashi in length, size, weight and feel. While they're not quite as rigid as wood, they have the advantages of being virtually unbreakable and remarkably stiff and cut resistant.

Citadel's swords and knives are completely hand-made one off customs made entirely in their small shop in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We've asked them to make for us a few in the same style, but made in the same way as their custom swords. Crafted individually from start to finish, each one is of course a bit unique in it's own way. Limited to 100 swords, each is signed by the smith on the nakago with the sword number and comes with a matching certificate. Click here to read about how these exceptional samurai swords are made. This rendition of the classical bamboo themed katana is a light and fast sword. Hand forged from imported European DNH7 high carbon steel the differentially hardened blade features a "bo-hi" or fuller to lighten and balance the blade without sacrificing strength. This is an extremely collectible and capable sword. The tsuba is hand cut and engraved from pure iron. The "nanako" or stippled pattern on the tsuba is accomplished by hand, quite a feat of patience with a stunning result. The tsuba also features "seki-gane", metal inserts at the top and bottom of the hole for the blade to slip through. These are of a softer metal (copper) than the iron of the tsuba and allow easier shaping of the hole to perfectly fit the tsuba to the blade. Over time if this fit becomes loose or the tsuba is fitted to another blade the seki-gane may be adjusted easily to tighten it back up. This is a small detail usually only found on hand-made Japanese tsuba and is indicative of the level of care and craftsmanship given to these swords by Citadel. The "tsuka" or handle and "saya" or scabbard are hand carved to fit each individual blade ensuring a proper fit. The handle is wrapped in genuine imported silk form Japan and tightly wrapped around the full same-gawa or ray skin wrap around the wooden core. The saya is lacquered in black to a nice semi-gloss finish with a ray skin wrap near the mouth of the saya to strengthen this area.In hand this sword feels as if it is a natural extension to your arm, a truly exceptional experience.Collect the set; a samurai wore two swords, the matching short sword or wakizashi is also available to complete your daisho collection.

Limited to just 100 swords, each is signed by the smith on the nakago with the sword number and comes with a matching certificate. This katana is made in the same manner as the more costly Citadel katana (see Ocean and Bamboo) but with a focus on cutting practice this sword's fittings have been simplified to their purest form. The blade is solid, with no bo-hi or fuller to provide a slightly higher weight and forward balance. However Citadel sharply tapers the blade geometry from the shinogi or central ridge to the mune or back of the blade. This allows for a thicker blade with more niku or apple-seed geometry behind the edge while maintaining proper balance. This means the robust blade can stand up to traditional target cutting of harder targets, usually fresh green bamboo, without worry of chipping the edge. The fittings are hand cut and shaped from pure iron, an extremely tough material that takes a deep black patina and needs minimal maintenance. Iron will bend under tremendous shock instead of break, a feature any samurai would appreciate. The Lotus design of the tsuba is in an older, simpler style (kyo sukashi, maru gata) that reflects the nature of the sword. The tsuka or handle and scabbard are hand carved to fit each individual sword ensuring a proper fit. The ito or handle wrap is of black natural silk imported from Japan. It is tightly wrapped around the full same-gawa or ray skin wrap with the proper hishigami or paper triangles present to ensure a long life of use. The saya is lacquered to a semi-gloss finish with buffalo horn mounts (koiguchi, kurikata and kojiri). This is an exceptional sword for practitioners of tameshigiri that want a unique sword.Collect the set; a samurai wore two swords, the matching Wakizashi is also available to complete your collection.
