Driven by a desire to arrange all things according to his will, he became (Melkor) Morgoth's most trusted lieutenant and was considered his greatest servant in the Wars of Beleriand. In the Second Age, in the disguise of the beautiful Annatar, he deceived the Elves of Eregion into forging the Rings of Power, while secretly forging the One Ring in Mount Doom and becoming the "Lord of the Rings". Sauron allowed himself to be captured by the Númenóreans, where his wickedness led to the downfall of Númenor. His spirit escaped and regained power in Mordor, while the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor were established. The Elves and the Dúnedain formed the Last Alliance and marched against Sauron in 3441 CE. The siege lasted seven years and ended with Sauron leaving his fortress to break the siege himself, pushing the Alliance back to the slopes of Orodruin. There, Sauron killed the Alliance leaders, Gil-galad and Elendil, in single combat, but was himself defeated when Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's finger. Sauron's body died and his spirit fled. Without the power of the One Ring, Sauron could not take form in Middle-earth for a thousand years. Adaptation notes: In Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Sauron is first seen in the prologue to the trilogy. He is depicted as a tall, but not gigantic, armored warlord wielding a huge mace (a mix of his vague description in Tolkien and the more detailed appearance of Morgoth as described in The Silmarillion). The original helmet was designed by Weta Workshop and worn by actor Sala Baker. In the battle cutscene, Sauron is shown cutting down numerous Elves and Men with his mace before killing Gil-galad (off camera) and Elendil, until he is finally defeated by Isildur, who cuts off the Ring with his father's broken sword. This causes Sauron's body to explode, creating a shockwave as the original helmet falls to the ashy ground, smoking with the corruption of his hatred.

He later agreed to join the Fellowship on its quest to destroy "The One Ring.TM" In a single moment of weakness, Boromir attempted to take the Ring from Frodo,TM which would in turn lead to his demise as he single-handedly defended hobbits, Merry and Pippin, from the hands of Saruman´sTM Uruk-haiTM before falling under a rain of arrows. Boromir´s sword was single-handed, big, broad and powerful - a fit complimentary to its owner. To use it required someone with great strength, which this skilled warrior abundantly possessed. The blade´s flattened diamond shape and equally wide fuller reduced weight, yet retained strength in the end of the blade by stopping just short of the tip. It was equally effective for slashing against lightly armored opponents and for thrusting into more heavily protected enemies. The guard, similar to that of his father´s sword, showed a warrior´s flourish in that it was formed from a square-edged piece of steel that had been twisted before being curved into a crescent. The handgrip was wide like the blade, and the pommel was an elegant and simple piece of steel that added weight to balance the blade. Arwen's sword is called Hadhafang which means Throng-cleaver. It once belonged to the Elven princess Idril, who wed a mortal man and bore Earendil, the father of Elrond who in turn was father to Arwen. Before Arwen's birth Elrond wielded Hadhafang at the end of the second age of Middle-Earth, during the Last Alliance of Elves and Men in the great battle against Sauron. Later his daughter Arwen used Hadhafang when she aided Frodo in his escape from the Ringwraiths. Inscribed on the blade are runes in the Elven language of Sindarin that say "aen estar Hadhafang i chathol hen, thand arod dan i thang an i arwen." Which translates to "this blade is called Hadhafang, a noble defense against the enemy throng for a noble lady." The original inscription included the last line "Idril i hel en aran Gond dolen," which translates to "Idril, daughter of the king of the Hidden Rock (Gondolin)." It was dropped from the finished prop due to a lack of space. There is an intentional pun in the inscription - the Sindarin translation of "noble lady" is "Arwen", so in effect, the blade claims to be for Arwen, even though it was made for her grandmother.
