The potion´s origin...
Back in the Middle Ages people called wealthy tradespeople "moneybags" - because they imported finest spices from the orient. Only peers and rich patricians could afford to put their wealth on the display by flavoring their wines with precious ingredients. Nevertheless also poor people longed for seasoning their quite sour wines with herbs and spices. Due to their poverty they rather used domestic herbs from their own gardens.
The name "Hypocras" derives from the ancient Greek philosopher and medico Hippocrates, who is known for inventing the Hippocratic oath, which even today every medic has to take.Even in the old times certain herbs were poular for their healing powers and were used against sundry sufferings. "Hypocras" originally meant "healing potion" but is used today as stimulant with pleasant effect.
Particularly after a rich meal, against stomach upset or a cold, all the salutary herbs have a genial effect. Moreover Hypcras is a delicate drink - consumed as aperitif to activate digestion or just for enjoyment.
This 0,20 l bottle of Hypocras Original (11 Vol %) with a flavour between "chuff and moneybag". Slightly warmed-up it is diaphoretic and an effectful abatement for a cold.
